As an elementary teacher, I always want to teach about the different holidays we celebrate in America. Some of the questions I couldn't always answer were about the great icons Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty. The icon section of the book did a wonderful job explaining how these two got their start. I can now better explain to my students when we are learning about the different American holidays. I was also able to get a better understanding about the patriotic holidays America celebrates such as Columbus Day and Flag Day. Normally I skim through introductions of most books, but not with this one. I learned so many new things I could then teach my students. I couldn't believe how much I didn't know, or may have forgotten since taking history classes. If you know of anyone who is patriotic, this is a perfect book for them. I highly recommend it!
I am a true patriot. Patriotic Holidays are some of my favorite. Memorial Day, now I learned is also called Decoration Day, in my town is a big deal. We have a terrific parade and ceremony that pays tribute to our fallen soldiers. On July 4th we head to the beach for a fireworks show with USA flashing in the sky. Veterans Day is the day after my birthday so I can never forget. Learning about how important this holiday is make me sad that most people and companies do not recognize it as they one did.
