MAYOR BLOOMBERG DISCUSSES CITY'S WORK TO BUILD ON RECORD TOURISM WITH RESTORATION OF LOEW'S KINGS THEATRE AND PLANS FOR SUPER BOWL XLVIII IN WEEKLY RADIO ADDRESS

The following is the text of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s weekly radio address as prepared for delivery on 1010 WINS News Radio for Sunday, January 27, 2013.

“Good Morning. This is Mayor Mike Bloomberg.

“No matter how much you’ve achieved, you have to seize every opportunity to build on your success. New York just completed a record year in tourism, and our arts and culture community is stronger than ever. But we’re not celebrating – we’re working even harder to ensure this growth continues. Let me tell you about two good examples of how we’re doing that now.

“The first is our long-awaited deal to finally restore the largest indoor theater in Brooklyn – the Loew’s Kings Theater in Flatbush – to its former glory. Modeled on the Palace of Versailles, the Kings Theater was a major attraction for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and countless visitors between 1929, when it was built, and 1977, when it closed its doors. For the next 35 years, this cultural landmark sat vacant. But on Wednesday, I visited Kings Theater to announce that our Administration has finalized an agreement with the Kings Theater Redevelopment Corporation to begin reconstruction work immediately and to operate the theater in 2015 when it opens.

“The new Kings Theater will be the Radio City Music Hall of Brooklyn, and it’s going to have a real impact on our economy. Restoring and expanding it – from 68,000 to 93,000 square-feet – will create an estimated 500 jobs. Once open, the theater will support 50 permanent jobs, and its 200 to 250 annual performances will support hundreds of temporary jobs for freelancers. The plays, concerts, and other events this new venue will host – and the audiences they attract – will help spur additional investment along Flatbush Avenue and throughout Central Brooklyn. It’s another reason why so many people want to live in and visit Brooklyn.

“Last week we also announced some exciting news about the Super Bowl – the 2014 Super Bowl. The Metropolitan Area will host the Super Bowl for the first time ever – and we’re going to make sure that the events leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII are as exciting as the game itself.

“For the four days leading up to the 2014 Super Bowl – from Wednesday, January 29, through Saturday, February 1 – Broadway from 34th to 44th Streets will become ‘Super Bowl Boulevard,’ and it will be alive with free football fun. There will be outdoor musical performances and other live events on multiple stages, appearances by current and former NFL players, football clinics and competitions, and other fan-friendly, inter-active events that will make being in New York for the Super Bowl truly memorable.

“We expect Super Bowl 48 to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for our local economy, and our line-up of events will not only play an important role in maximizing our Super Bowl boost, it’s also going to show our city’s best face to people from around the world, and encourage them to make return visits.

“To raise the curtain on more economic growth, we’re advancing the ball on two historic projects that will benefit our city for years to come.
