Whom You Know is thrilled to kick off our coverage of Ammo books and we thought the most ideal way to do so is with the incomparable Edward Weston. These 125 photographs will evoke both admiration and emotion in each soul that peruses the great work, and as Valentine's Day rolls around the corner, it is a wonderful gift for someone that you love with an appreciation for art.
This beautifully produced book chronologically presents the artist’s impressive body of work from 1918 to 1948. I
f you love photography and do not know the work of Edward Weston, this book is required viewing.
From portraits, to landscapes, to details -- Edward Weston’s photography captures the FEELING of beauty.
Edward Weston’s keen eye and technical mastery transform into sensual sculpture wet seaweed, an artichoke, a cabbage leaf, a pepper . . .Edward Henry Weston may not be name that runs trippingly off your tongue. Unless, you happen to be a student of photography, or a lover of black and white pictures of California topography. In the 1920's, 30's and 40's, Weston built a bank of such gorgeous imagery that precedent was made. The shell of a nautilus, or a shack in the hills of California was only part of his repertoire. His exquisite vision captures even the most mundane item and transforms it into a paramount work of art. Weston worked his way across the West, literally, with the help of a Guggenheim fellowship, capturing images and sensations, his own point of view. Much touted by his contemporaries, friends with the likes of Ansel Adams, and renowned amongst the literary and museum set, Weston has given us ample documentation of an early America, and a fresh outlook on life. His favorite F stop (64) allowed for "extremely sharp, well-focused photographs". No retouching , just pure developmental talent, and art were his touchstones. With the muses he accumulated throughout his rich life, Weston traveled to Mexico, and to Carmel (where he eventually settled) taking portraits of hillsides, faces, bodies. His compositions are inspiration for photographic students today, but lend themselves to inspiration for architecture, graphics, design on a much broader scale. Famous faces, yes, such as Frida Kahlo, have posed for his camera, but the imagery he created with a cabbage leaf, or a beach of seaweed are impressive. Indelible imagery, thankfully captured in several books, even a documentary have been left to us by Mr. Weston. In this beautifully edited, beautifully presented hard cover book by Ammo Books, Steve Crist gives us wonder. It's not to be missed.
