Two things from Cruising Peachy: The Rolex 24 at Daytona, and free passes to Mass. Auto Show AND Trans-Am race weekend at LRP

The entry list for this weekend’s Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona – always the kick-off to each year’s racing season – as usual has a terrific roster of drivers and cars. With the demise of IROC, along with frantically over-protective sponsors and their gazillions of “invested” dollars and insured drivers, the Rolex 24 has become motorsport’s de facto all-star event: It is the world’s only real race that draws stars from racing’s different disciplines (with, um, apologies to the annual Race of Champions, with its dune buggies and solo II-style racing).
Here’s a sampling of the “cross-platform” drivers you’ll see in this year’s Rolex classic...

* Michael Waltrip is driving a Ferrari 458 GT-class car with his NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Clint Bowyer; this is Bowyer’s first sports car race
* NASCAR’s Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray are each in Ganassi BMW-Riley DPs...
* ...as are Indycar stars Scott Dixon (two-time champ, Indy 500 winner), Dario Franchitti (four-time Indycar champion, and three-time and defending Indy 500 champion) and Charlie Kimball
* Multi-time Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais is paired with prototype superstar Allan McNish (a two-time winner at Lime Rock Park) in a Ford-Riley DP
* Christian Fittipaldi and Nelson Piquet, Jr., both with F1 creds, are in a Corvette DP
* 2012 Indycar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay is in another Corvette DP
* Longtime Michael Schumacher Ferrari F1 teammate Rubens Barichello co-drives with former Indycar champion Tony Kanaan in a Porsche GT3
* 2012 Indycar Rookie of the Year Simon Pagenaud is paired with 2002 Indy 500 polesitter Bruno Junqueira in a BMW-Riley DP
* Always exciting Paul Tracy, a star in Indycar racing since forever, is in a Ford-Riley DP
* Former F1-and-now Indycar driver Justin Wilson is in a Ford-Riley DP with A.J. Allmendinger, NASCAR’s Marcos Ambrose, John Pew and Oz Negri

See how cool the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona is? And we haven’t even mentioned Grand-Am’s regular stars such as Memo Rojas, Scott Sharp, Joey Hand, Ryan Dalziel, Scott Pruett, Ricky and Jordan Taylor, Bill Auberlen, Jon Fogarty, Alex Gurney, Memo Gidley...

You can watch the Rolex 24 at Daytona this weekend on SPEED, with coverage starting Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time (green flag at 3:30).

One more thing: On Saturday, between noon and 12:30, radio station WATR AM 1320 will have a guest from Lime Rock Park on Tom Hill's show discussing the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the same stars and cars that will be at Lime Rock September 27-28 for the Grand-Am Championship finale. The station streams online at www.watr.com.
