All we have to say is good thing that the Polish mother from South Carolina was socially inclusive with the quiet Israeli who likes to cook on the Pace University trip to Brazil back in 2006...and your stomach is going to agree the moment your tastebuds encounter the excellence at Kipsey's. A
brand-
spanking-new spot in Kips Bay at three weeks old, Kipsey's exceeded our expectations and the combination of the talents of owners Arnon and Melissa Magal will wow you. They really are as nice and as happy as you see in that picture. You might not think Southern Cooking goes with Israeli cooking and our resident Eater-in-Chief knows little about either being an Irish Catholic from the North, but she learned it makes total sense. This is the beauty of America!
Kipsey's was first featured in Tasty Tidbits:
and we are pleased to announce it has joined the ranks of Peachy's Picks.
We are honored to be the first to review this amazing team!
Peachy began with an American 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from California that was a robust beginning to an excellent feast.
As we were perusing the menu, Melissa and Arnon surprised us with our first edible entry into Kipsey's: Chipotle cornbread seen here.
Cornbread is not high on Peachy's list as a food at all because usually it is dry and has little flavor. She would have never ordered messy cornbread. However, she was pleasantly surprised as this is the best cornbread she has EVER had. It was moist! It had flavor! It was not crumbly and did not make a mess. And that parsley butter was just divine. Wow number one.
It is pleased with itself.
As an appetizer, Peachy chose the Caesar Salad with Rotisserie Chicken. Even the dressing was fantastic and it was delivered on the side, as requested. This salad was exactly as it should be and we love their cute logo on plates. We love details like this.
We were not done with appetizers though! Next in the batting order was the Chicken Liver Pate, another item that Peachy would not have ordered on her own but Arnon and Melissa had the better sense to make her try. Served with fresh whole grain bread baked two times a day and applesauce with mustard seeds cooked in red wine, vinegar and sugar, this was not your typical chopped liver. Melissa and Arnon are turning the term Chopped Liver into a compliment!
The bread is even better with the appetizer Peachy liked the most (and she did like them all): House Cured Salmon. It is a quick cure with salt, sugar and dill and served up with heavenly clouds of mascarpone cheese and chive oil. This House Cured Salmon is a total dream.
Next came the main course and the sides. You will be sad when the Broken Potato Gratin is gone from your plate. Served piping hot, it is absolutely delicious. It is broken as it is cut from the larger pan. Nothing about the flavor is broken one bit.
It is resting upon a bed of Hamhock Greens, which are a total must at Kipsey's. By definition, they are kale and collard greens together. Kipsey's makes them even more splendid by cooking the collard greens for 45 minutes, adding the Kale, and infusing it with bacon. Arnon and Melissa even make their own bacon curing it and smoking it for 45 days. Nothing is done halfway here they are very intense and the results are smashing.
Finally, we arrived at dessert. Yuki Levinson (no relation to the Downton Abbey American Grandmother Martha Levinson played by Shirley MacLaine) is pastry chef extraordinaire.
Apple crumble is perfect with the apples separate from the crumbs and served with thrilling whipped cream!
Also don't miss the flourless chocolate cake which is sweet but not overly so. Finally, as you know we are not price sensitive in what we review, but if you are, you will find Kipsey's to be the absolute best deal in town. Especially when you consider how spacious it is too.
Our esteemed panelist adds:
Kipsey's is a very good restaurant serving Southern food and other specialties. The house smoked salmon was terrific, and so was the brisket.
And the french fries!
The grilled wings must be an example of their expertise with the rotisserie...( I'm going back for the whole chicken!)
Yuki is a great addition as baker and pastry chef.
Arnon and Melissa are great hosts with great biographies and for a restaurant that's a mere 3 weeks old, the service was very good and knowledgeable.
Kipsey's feels as it has been there for years.
