In the mid-nineteenth century, it was quite novel to own a camera.  However, by the 1890's it became more common to be a camera owner as photography began to be democratized.  There's something wonderful about the promise of the future that we see in the faces of the people captured by the camera shutters whose prints grace these pages.  We loved seeing one of our favorites Robert Doisneau, included in this fantastic work.  The use of mirrors is brilliant right down to the distortion effects shown in the fun house.  Perspective is key especially at the height of the Michigan suspension bridge; we are happy to see the view in the book and glad we didn't have to go up there ourselves...!  We were also elated to see The Kissing Sailor included and we even reviewed a whole book on that photo last summer.  Who knew about the Eagle Head Gargoyle at the Top of the Chrysler Building?  We walk by it so many times with such little knowledge of what is actually perched up there...by page 60 we see a woman photographer finally made it in these pages!  We love the photos Billy Joel/Christie Brinkley & The Supremes being participants in the great art and sport of photography.  On page 140-141 Marilyn Monroe at the Savoy in London is a winner.  We adored seeing Queen Elizabeth using her camera at the Windsor Horse Show.  Bravo to the actress who attacks paparazzi with ice cream in Rome!  1959's Portobello Market looks intriguing as we'd expect from the later incarnations we've experienced.  Our favorite photograph in the whole book is the underwater camera on page 94!  Which one is your favorite?  You'll find many.

Michael Pritchard and Tony Nourmand

An extravagant photographic history of photographers and their cameras.

Photographers celebrates the truly innovative men and women behind the camera;
trailblazers in their field, who captured and immortalised our world.
This definitive edition, published by Reel Art Press, shows rarely seen photographs of some of
twentieth-century photography’s greatest names. From Henri Cartier-Bresson and Weegee,
to David Bailey and Richard Avedon by way of the men and women of Life and Picture Post
magazines as well as anonymous pressmen, they are all shown at work with their camera.

Photographers shows photographers with their celebrity subjects, who range from the bestknown Hollywood stars to players of sport, musicians and politicians. It also shows some of
those same celebrities turning the camera back on to the photographer.
Photographers shows off the classic cameras used by the press, photojournalists and fashion
photographers. The Leica, the Nikon, the Pentax, the Rolleiflex and Speed Graphic are
among the cameras shown in use. A section on wartime photographs shows aerial cameras in
action.

Amongst the photographers shown are: Antony Armstrong-Jones, Richard Avedon, David
Bailey, Cecil Beaton, Margaret Bourke-White, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Terence
Donovan, Philippe Halsman, Bert Hardy, Annie Leibovitz, Tony Ray-Jones and Weegee.
