Les Miserables, the classic novel by Victor Hugo, has been a tale enjoyed by millions for over a century. This inspiring story has spawned a movie, the famous musical, and now even a grand movie musical just released in late 2012. One of the greatest interpretations of this story, however, combines the best in story-telling and musical talent. In 1995, stars from both the original London and Broadway cast productions of the musical joined together with a 150-voice chorus and the Royal Philharmonic at Royal Albert Hall in London. Thankfully, this performance is available on DVD through BBC Home Entertainment. The performances by these artists are absolutely stunning. The beautiful voices actually conjure up goosebumps on the skin! Whether or not you have seen the show on Broadway, in London, or recently in theaters, this performance is a must watch! There is a level of talent and grand scale that goes unmatched. Get your hands on Les Miserables: 10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert hall, and see this classic story like you never have before!
After Hollywood's reawakening Les Miserables with their star-studded cinematic version, it would seem that the hyper popular musical will never be forgotten. In 1995, the 10 year anniversary concert performance took place, and is ours for the watching, thanks to BBC Home Entertainment. Ten years of magic, with performers from across the years that the stage play/musical has been performed are here. A dream cast that will bring tears, chills and an overwhelming sense of history to this beloved classic. For those not familiar with the stage version, Victor Hugo's spell-binding story centers around an ex-convict, and the lives entwined with his. Valjean is a hero of the people, and his story compels. With music written (originally in French) in an operatic format, with the singers/actors emoting through lyrics, the show has always been emotional. On this DVD, we get to see 17 of the Valjeans from around the world in a finale that will make a fan of anyone not yet in the hallowed club of Les Mis freaks. From "Master of the House" to "I Dreamed a Dream", here is the definitive concert performance that will crystallize the legend and wonder that is Les Miserables. Thankfully, there is a second disc included in the set that highlights the creative process. Backstage, even behind the scenes, as seen through the eyes of the composer, the lyricist, and the producer becomes part of the story. From the first thought in 1978 to it's present day productions in over 70 cities around the world, Victor Hugo's masterpiece came alive. Summed up in a quote by the composer, Schonberg, they were just "trying to make the dreams of childhood come true".
Relaxing in for a nice night on our couch, I love watching excellent programs. Today with so many tv channels and movies out there it's hard to find something of quality with a good story and great acting. That is why we were exited to watch Les Miserables from BBC Video. This excellent production features the best actors and actresses from London and Australia. The classic music performed is from the original broadway show which was inspired by Victor Hugo's novel. The quality of vocals and music is phenomenal. If only I could sing like that. This is wonderfully entertaining and something to be shared with all ages. The story is beautiful and it will surely touch you. Be prepared to be moved, and sing along from the comfort of your own home, I promise we won't tell.
Les Mis was one story I had always heard about, but never read the book or seen the Broadway play. With the hype of the new movie, my interest was piqued. When I saw the BBC Home Entertainment DVD of Les Mis, I almost immediately stuck it in to watch it. I was thrilled by what I saw as it was starting. I didn't really read anything on the slip jacket and didn't realize this was filmed from the original London and Broadway show. Normally when I'm watching a DVD, I can't sit still. I have to do something while it's on. I sat completely still during the entire movie. Not many movies can do that. This is one I could watch over and over again and not get bored.
