71% of the Earth's surface is ocean. However, how much do we really know about the ocean and the life within it? Well, thanks to the BBC, we now know a lot more! Their gorgeous and informative documentary, The Blue Ocean, provides viewers with an in-depth look at the world's oceans and the amazing creatures that can be found in it. The documentary took nearly five years to create, and was originally aired as an miniseries on the BBC in 2001. Narrated by David Attenborough, The Blue Planet is visually stunning and also transmits a wealth of information in a simple, easy-to-comprehend fashion. From the coastlines to the very deepest depths of the ocean (some 4,000) meters, The Blue Planet probes more of the world's oceans than has ever been probed before, capturing both well-known animals and never-seen-before species. From the largest whales to the tiniest creatures swimming in the oceans, viewers are treated to jaw-droppingly amazing images. There are 8 separate episodes: "The Blue Planet" (a comprehensive overview of the earth's oceans), "The Deep" (a fascinating look into the unknown depths of the ocean, exploring never-seen-before areas), "Open Ocean" (focusing on the areas of the oceans that are furthest from land), "Frozen Seas" (an examination of the freezing, hostile environments of the Arctic and Antarctic), "Seasonal Seas" (a look at the effects of the seasons on the world's temperate seas), "Coral Seas" (focusing on the beautiful and teeming-with-life coral reefs), "Tidal Seas" (a look at the marine life structured around rising and falling tides), and "Coasts" (which takes a look at coastal life, including species that permanently reside there, and species that return to the coast to breed). Each episode, in and of itself, is absolutely riveting, not to mention a visual joy! In addition to the original 8 episodes of the miniseries, which are contained on 2 DVDs, there is a third DVD of bonus features, including the extra programs "Amazon Abyss," "Dive to Shark Volcano," "Between the Tides," "Antarctica," and "Deep Trouble." Each of these programs is equally as captivating and visually stimulating as the original 8 episodes, and their inclusion makes this 3-DVD set even more exciting! As a whole, The Blue Planet is, hands down, one of the most beautiful, intriguing, and informative documentaries I've ever seen. Highly, highly recommended!

Beneath the surface of the ocean has always been intriguing to me. Many of our vacations are planned around snorkeling, diving and exploring. There is so much mystery of what is thriving in this underworld. The BBC Series “The Blue Planet: Seas of Life” really dives into this aquatic paradise and all of the life that inhabits there. Incredible cameras and videos entice you with breathtaking images and informative narrative. I get lost in the whole circle of life when you see turtles planting their eggs and then hatching with baby turtles scrambling for their live with immediate danger lurking to eat them up. Or the way the weather affects above the surface as much as below. This is a must-see video and so internally thought provoking that it is the only documentary you really need. I will never get tired of watching it and sharing it with my children and family.

The voice of David Attenborough may be familiar to some because of other BBC programs, as he discusses phytoplankton, algae and the small beginnings of our east oceans. The BBC, by nature (pun intended), commands respect in the home entertainment market for its award-winning content. Including its cinematography, scripting and educational point of view, and you've got another series worth owning and revisiting hour by hour. Riveting entertainment provides a soft edge to the education received in all of their series and the Blue Planet is high on the list of their latest additions to any home library. This is a history of the oceans and the changing coastal areas that are part of their co-existing environs. From the tiniest (remember that plankton?) to the largest, the great whales, the crew involves the viewer as few camera crews can. Jacques Cousteau's front-line cameraman is also on board, with his back end experience of working with the father of oceanic discovery. Miles of ocean contain worlds of living history, and man's deep seated origins. As a lover of the vast blue sea, or just a lover of tropical fish, you'll find the series filled with facts, findings, and environmental wisdom. This is the type of background visual that can play for hours, with an always fascinating point of view. "As deep as the ocean" may be a popular song, but the reality is so enthralling, and the sea so hypnotizing, that hours of viewing pleasure can be had in this tiny box.

BBC's Blue Planet is a visual and musical masterpiece. The film is breathtakingly beautiful.  Every frame of this series would make a stunning photograph on its own -- from the pictures of rolling clouds to rolling waves to rolling whale tails. In this three-disc feature, BBC goes to great lengths to bring into our homes the majesty of the ocean and its inhabitants. The format is didactic, yet intriguing and entertaining. In this series, aided by the use of submersibles, BBC gifts us with glimpses of underwater worlds seldom seen or imagined. BBC does the Earth and us a service by documenting the beauty and astounding wisdom of our seas. This gorgeous documentary represents a well-placed responsibility on us to understand and preserve. Neptune is proudly smiling.
