News from Sotheby's New York: Today at Sotheby’s the Contemporary Art Day sale totaled $83,806,875 to bring overall sales of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s over the past two days to $377,393,875

Today at Sotheby’s the Contemporary Art Day sale totaled $83,806,875 to bring overall sales of Contemporary Art at Sotheby’s over the past two days to $377,393,875.

Scott Nussbaum, Head of Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Day sales commented: “I am thrilled with our extraordinary total of $83,806,875 which is among the highest ever achieved for a Contemporary Art Day Sale. We sold 11 works for over $1 million – a healthy increase on the previous sale in November. The auction was led by Red Over Yellow by Ellsworth Kelly, the 1966 painting which achieved $3,973,000, double the pre-sale estimate and among the highest prices paid for the artist at auction. Like last night’s Evening Auction our top ten spanned over 70 years from Alexander Calder’s 1940 Untitled standing mobile which doubled the high estimate to sell for $2,629,000, to Uh Oh by Ed Ruscha which was painted just last year and sold for $1,205,000 to benefit the Whitney Museum of American Art’s new building project. Over both evening and day sales Sotheby’s has offered 25 works to benefit the Whitney which raised a total of $19,138,250, exceeding the collective high estimate by over $5 million.”
