If you've ever been to Cape Cod, you know the lure of this exquisite area of our country. The sheer beauty of the ocean views, the pleasantness of the small, tranquil towns, the sand dunes, the lighthouses...it's an absolutely stunning location. And once you've been there, you'll yearn to return. Well, thanks to Kathryn Kleekamp's beautiful book, Cape Cod and the Islands: Where Beauty and History Meet, published by Schiffer, Cape Cod can now come to you! Fifty of Katherine's original oil paintings of the Cape Cod landscape are featured in the book, along with rare historic photos. Additionally, there is a wealth of information on the history of Cape Cod, along with a few recipes featuring some of the fruits, vegetables, and sea life native to Cape Cod. There are separate chapters dedicated to both Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, two of the biggest tourist destinations, and each of them beautifully describes the history of the islands, as well as what life is like there today. An absolutely beautiful book on a beautiful subject!
As summer approaches, it is time to start planning the next trip out to Cape Cod. This year, however, I will have a unique perspective compared to years past. That is because I have read the book Cape Cod and the Islands: Where Beauty and History Meet, by Kathryn Kleekamp. This book highlights the stunning scenery and architecture of the region, and it also explains the history behind everything. Kleekamp goes into extraordinary detail on the history of everything you would ever want to know about this area. She even includes a chapter with recipes, so not only can you read about Cape Cod, you can taste it too! This book is perfect for anyone who loves spending time at the Cape, or who wishes they could get out there more often!
From the "first-comers" to the extensive bibliography at the end of the book, Kathryn Kleekamp covers the romantic isolation that is Cape Cod. Primarily a compilation of the artist's works, this book loads its reader with historicity. Living in tandem with the roughly beautiful terrain, the early Pilgrims made Cape Cod their own. They forged a living from the new land, incorporating the indigenous life of the Indians and thus founded a new nation. The artist's style shifts from an almost naif to a splendid portraiture of the landscape add her work depicts the farmhouses, towns and their surrounds. With her love of land and sea, Kathryn Kleekamp describes the area of this first colonial settlement in visuals and entertaining text. This book will seduce chapter by chapter those who are unfamiliar with the area. For those of us who have spent time at Plymouth Plantation, Provincetown, or any one of the coastal towns in New England, this is an ongoing celebration of a love affair. Lovely old photographs and the odd charming local recipe lend deeper intuition about the early residents of the region. This is history revealed, history celebrated, with an artist's point of view, with love .
This book has some of the most gorgeous oil and watercolor paintings that I wish I owned. If they were any bigger I would cut this book up and frame them all. There are many great recipes in the book and they are accessible for all ranges in cooking ability. Meaning even I can follow most of them. There is almost too much information to share in this review. However, I did learn that there are three sizes of Quahog clams and they are used for different purposes. The largest is for chowder. Cherrystones for Clambakes. And the smallest for frying. For those who have ever visited Cape Cod you can fall in love all over again with this informative and beautiful book.

Cape Cod and its neighboring islands, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, possess extraordinary beauty. Magnificent ocean vistas, spectacular sand dunes, quiet marshes, and historic seaside villages, bring people back year after year. For the inquiring visitor the remarkable stories of courage and enterprise by those who settled the land and shaped its character provide background for thoughtful reflection. This stunning new book features fifty of Kathryn Kleekamp's original oil paintings depicting land and seascapes along with rare historic photographs. Image and text capture the fundamental nature of this remarkable area: the heartbeat of those who farmed the land, fished the seas, captained the great schooners, or waited at home for a loved one's return. The historic vignettes explore major influences that made Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard what they are today. Traditional Cape and Island recipes found here are another link to the present from the past.
