With its scenic rivers, lakes, and and ponds, picturesque villages, harbors, lush farmlands and forests, historical sites, and view of the Long Island Sound, Connecticut is truly a place of beauty. And thanks to Connecticut by Bicycle: Fifty Great Scenic Routes, written by Frederick John Lamp and published by Schiffer, it's very easy to plan a day trip to take in some of the beautiful scenery while also getting some exercise! Each of the fifty trips is represented by a four-page spread with beautiful color photographs, a description of the trip, a map, and exact mileage and directions. The routes are chosen for their scenic value, and after looking at the pictures, I'm sorely tempted to hop on a bike and try each of them out! The book is both educational and entertaining - there is plenty of information given, but in a most enjoyable way. All of the routes can be completed on a road bicycle, although the author notes that some of the routes may be more comfortable on a hybrid. Both avid cyclists and those who are looking for scenic day trips will love this book - the attention to detail and the creative itineraries truly make it a standout!
As a Connecticut native, I get so excited when I see a book about my beautiful home state. Obviously, when I saw Connecticut by Bicycle, by Frederick John Lamp, I just had to have a copy! This book is the first full color guide to to the state of Connecticut by road bike for the moderate-level rider. The book covers six geographical regions of the state in fifty rides. It is full of beautiful photos of the lovely Connecticut countryside. It even has a route through my favorite town, my hometown of East Haddam! I cannot wait to test out the route this summer when I visit my family!
Schiffer likes to blend topics and unique content in their popular culture library. In this beautifully photographed picture book, the author, Frederick John Lamp takes us on well-plotted tours of the Northeast State of Connecticut. The tours, although meant to be taken by bicycle, could be a jumping-off point for any sight-seeing trip through this history laden state. Architecture, history and scenic views are taken into account in the plan. Maps and background information is provided on easy area described, and included. Everything but the proverbial picnic lunch is between two covers of this ingenious volume. A must have on every coffee-table, cottage, and guest room in the Northeast, it supplies little known facts and inroads via backwoods trails. Each trip is planned with a suggestion with a meeting place, the length of the trip (via bicycle), sights, challenges and hints for food and rest stops. For bike enthusiasts, this is a great way to plan a summer weekend. It's American history up close and personal.
I am so tired of looking up things on the internet for travel. I love this book because you can linger over the pages in a tangible and sensatory way. This book has concise information about the great trails in my favorite state of Connecticut. It allows you to plan out great trips as well as day rides. It has great landmarks and that will always be there making this book lasting and worthwhile. With so many cities trying to convert to bicycles this book is relevant today. Also with the green aspect of bikes, more and more people are taking up to cycling.

This is the first full-color guide to the state of Connecticut by road bike for the moderate-level rider. It will also be useful to anyone looking for scenic routes throughout the state, although bicycle riding affords the luxury of a slower pace in the open air. With an introduction to riding and to the resources available, the book covers six diverse geographical regions of Connecticut in fifty rides. Each ride is represented by a four-page spread with color photographs of the sights, a narrative description, a map, and a concise cue sheet with directions and mileage. The rides focus on the rich historical sites; the enterprise of Connecticut's people; and the great natural resources of the Long Island Sound, Connecticut's rivers, lakes, creeks, and the hills of the Berkshires. Routes also take you through farms, picturesque small villages, city streets, forests, and bogs to view the flora and fauna of the state.
