Once you step inside the illustrious Dominick's Cafe, it will become immediately apparent to you that you aren't in the latest trendy spot that will be a flash in the pan and be yesterday's news sooner than you know it. Instead, you will be delighted to learn you are in a bastion of Italian comfort food that is tremendously delicious, and we suspect will go on for even more generations. Dominick's Cafe is among the oldest culinary endeavors we've had the pleasure to work with, and it was started by the current owner's grandfather, who was named Dominick of course!
It was later taken over by the owner's uncle, also named Dominick we believe. It was started in 1956 and from then until 1966 it was located a block away from its current location. From 1966 to now it has been at 1109 First Avenue between 60,61. How many places can say they've had such continued longevity? Not many.
Angelo Amato is the third generation behind this Upper East side gem, and he is clearly proud of his family business:
A party of grilled chicken, crispy romaine lettuce, roasted peppers, artichoke hearts, mushrooms and green olives form a symphony of fresh goodness that we believe even Mayor Bloomberg who applauds great nutrition would be proud to eat. We hear many of the employees of his financial firm find Dominick's Cafe to be a big hit and they are right.
It is fun to play with fire and with this gourmet sandwich creation (they are known for such great works) you will enjoy playing with the heat. We can verify you will not be burned by Dante's Inferno, which is just stellar. Hot sopressatta, pepperoni, prosciutto affumicato (that means it's smoked silly if you don't speak italian), jalapeno cheese, hot peppers, tomatoes and house salad form a tantalizing treat. We can't remember the last time we had a sandwich this good! They make it fresh right in front of you, too. The semolina hero is just perfect. Note that Peachy the mozzarella addict asked for mozzarella to be added and they were happy to comply. She added it later herself because she wanted to show you the picture of the original. Mozzarella is made fresh everyday in Brooklyn.
As an appetizer we went for the marinated artichoke hearts, which were absolutely divine. Just inhaling the scent of them was fantastic and they did not last long. Everything we tried from Dominick's Cafe was triumphant and top quality-testament to why this spot has been killing it since 1956.
A decadent pasta dish of this venue is the Rigatoni al Ragu: Rigatoni with a Robust Meat Sauce. And they do mean ROBUST: it takes them four hours to create this decadent sauce that you'd swear your grandmother made, if you are Italian. But you don't need to ring her, just ring up Angelo...
