Maine Woolens, affordable luxury and tradition.
From the moment you walk inside Salvo's Pizza Bar on the Upper East side open since December 4, 2012, the undeniably appealing scent of Italian-American aromas will envelop you, and you'll be immediately enticed to try each component you detect by smell.  Though very casual, the new Salvo's Pizza Bar is a winner because it has great ownership and terrific fare.  Salvo's Pizza Bar was previously featured in Tasty Tidbits:
and Terrific Takeout:
It has graduated to Peachy's Picks!
Baked clams oreganata was the appetizer Peachy chose.  These were a bit hit at the Takeout!  Breaded with garlic, cheese, oregano and EVOO, you can tell they are made by a real Italian.  Joe tells us he was born in Sicily.
You cannot go to Salvo's Pizza Bar without trying the pizza.  It would be like passing go and not collecting $200 and sending yourself to jail.  Joe thought we should try the Margherita #2: round pie, fresh mozzarella cheese and plum tomato sauce.  This proves that less is more, and every bite was sincerely delicious.  The mozzarella is fresh, as you can see.  The crust was perfectly light.
Peachy also loved the vegetable pie she had during takeout, so do not be afraid to try more than one.  Mayor Bloomberg note we did not order a large soda or even a small one, we drank lovely red wine from Italy (we like to pretend it has no calories.)  It is a poor cultural decision to opt for soda over wine!  Only about 10% of pizza places in New York have beer and wine, and we think it was a smart decision for Salvo's to get a liquor license.  It makes them far more sophisticated.  It is quite kid-friendly however, it makes an awesome date place too-who does not like pizza and wine?  And if you bring your kid there, you will be in a better mood after a glass of wine for yourself with your pizza.

As you know we are on a health kick with our pal Mayor Bloomberg and our California friends Mover and Shaker Kelly Sasuga (you know the only microgreens we want to eat are by Fresh Origins!) and Church Brothers, who do the best big vegetables like the Italian Greens which you can find out about when you click on their name.  The green Italian item we tried at Salvo's Pizza Bar was the Broccoli Rabe:
Sauteed perfectly, it is a smart choice to go with your pizza and wine.  Sauteed spinach and sauteed broccoli are also two great options available at Salvo's.  It is also important to note that Salvo's offers whole wheat pasta and penne and gluten-free spaghetti.  They understand we all want to fit into our cocktail dresses tomorrow.
You need to know Salvo's does entrees quite well too.
If you had a dollar for every time Peachy mentioned how much she liked the chicken parm at Boston College in lower dining hall (the food at BC was excellent) you could all retire.  This was just as good as the BC one of her dreams.  And better now, because it is closer!  Delightfully smothered in mozzarella cheese, the chicken proved that Salvo's is more than a pizza bar.  And we split a side of pasta:
A cannoli with Joe, and the night was complete:
Our esteemed panelist adds:
For those on the go there is an array of various pizza slices to choose from, but if you have the time it is a nice relaxed spot to sit down and enjoy your meal. In addition to regular tables there is a bar area by the pizza counter, complete with hooks for your bags. Sitting here was fun because we mingled with some other neighborhood diners. Salvo’s has a delicious tomato sauce and so you can’t go wrong with any menu item involving the sauce! I began my Salvo's experience with the Merlot above.
From the appetizer menu I tried the Eggplant Rollatini. This is a generous size (good for sharing) of breaded eggplant with fresh ricotta, topped with tomato sauce and melted mozzarella. This was truly tasty and I could have had the whole thing for a main course. Salvo’s has many choices of pies, and often the simplest choice is the best showcase for the quality of the crust, sauce and cheese. The Margherita pizza was delicious. The crust is thinner than the typical pizza, again featuring the fresh tasting plum tomato sauce with slices of fresh mozzarella on top.
The Entrees at Salvo’s are a great value as they also come with a side of pasta. At Joe’s suggestion I had the Chicken Marsala. The marsala sauce was just right- flavorful and not too salty with the right amount of wine giving it a touch of richness, brought out by the sautéed mushrooms. The spaghetti was so simple but great; we tried the gluten-free pasta and the tomato sauce had just the right amount of herbs. Definitely order a side of vegetables, as the broccoli rabe, with lots of garlic, might have been my favorite item! Salvo’s has a variety of beer as well as Italian wine and sangria. The Passa Tempo merlot was smooth with a touch of spiciness and goes really well with pizza, pasta and chicken.
For dessert we had a traditional cannoli, and got to watch the filling piped into the shell before our eyes which was fun. If you’re in the area and just need quick break you can also get an espresso and drink it at the bar. Salvo’s Pizzabar is sure to be a regular spot for those living in the neighborhood.
