P.S. Art 2013, Annual Juried Exhibition of Art by NYC Public School Students, on View at the Metropolitan Museum June 11 - August 25, 2013

For ten weeks this summer, works of art by 83 of New York City public schools’ most talented students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 will be displayed in the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education at The Metropolitan Museum of Art through P.S. Art, a project of the New York City Department of Education and Studio in a School Association, Inc. P.S. Art is celebrating its eleventh year. The juried exhibition P.S. Art 2013: Celebrating the Creative Spirit of NYC Kids will open for special viewing by the public beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, for participants in the Museum Mile Festival, and will remain on view through August 25.

Hosted by the Met since 2008, the P.S. Art exhibition is one of the many ways in which the Met fosters creativity and learning by New York City students. Each year, the Met provides free museum visits to over 60,000 New York City public school students; over 2,500 teachers and administrators participate in professional development workshops at the Met.

Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Dennis Walcott, Chancellor, New York City Department of Education; Caroline Kennedy, Honorary Director, The Fund for Public Schools; and Agnes Gund, founder of Studio in a School, are among the speakers who will address students, parents, and teachers at a private ceremony prior to the opening.

Commenting on the Met’s participation in the project for the sixth consecutive year, Mr. Campbell said: “We are very happy to continue our commitment to P.S. Art by hosting this exhibition again this year. In addition to recognizing the unique talents of 83 exceptional young artists from all five boroughs, the display also acknowledges the support of the many dedicated teachers who have helped guide and nurture these students.”

Peggy Fogelman, the Museum’s Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education, added: “As in previous years, these young artists will receive free admission passes to the Museum for themselves and their parents, and we hope we will see them often over the summer months, as they explore the Met’s galleries. And to welcome families into the galleries after the reception, Metropolitan Museum maps and Make-Your-Mark self-guides—which are available throughout the year at the information desks—will be distributed in the Museum Great Hall and galleries. Staff will be available to direct visitors.”

The annual P.S. Art competition fully integrates all public school students in pre-kindergarten through the 12th grade. The works in this year’s exhibition were made by young artists with a broad spectrum of life experience: students having special needs are represented, as are those enrolled in advanced placement art classes. The exhibition shows how student creativity, artistic ability, and subject matter evolve in the journey from childhood to adulthood.

The works in the P.S. Art 2013 exhibition were chosen from 800 submissions citywide. A jury comprised of distinguished members of the art community, including staff from the Met, made the final selection.

All of the works in the exhibition will also be featured on the website of the Museum (www.metmuseum.org).
