In this day and age, much of what we know about Ireland comes from St. Patrick's Day celebrations, legends of leprechauns and rainbows, and various other stories that have been handed down through the ages. However, little (if anything!) is said about the Viking influence in Irish culture. Novelist Heather Graham, though, beautifully incorporates the story of the Viking founding of Dublin into her exciting and romantic novel, Golden Surrender. In this novel, she tells the story of Princess Erin, the youngest daughter of the Irish High King (the Ard-Righ), a free-spirited, beautiful, and feisty young woman who is forced into marriage with the one man she has sworn to hate: Prince Olaf of Norway. Torn between her pride and fierce loyalty to the Irish, and her growing, undeniable attraction to Olaf, Erin is forced to become wise beyond her years and make sacrifices for the benefit of Ireland, while setting aside personal dreams and desires. Loyalty, desire, passion, longing, and love all come into play in this exciting and engaging novel, which affords readers a glimpse into the Ireland of over 1200 years ago. Engaging and exciting from the word go, this novel is highly recommended for a great summer read!
Ms. Graham brings the Irish into her many books in ways that involve you instantly. With a bit of history, some steamy love scenes and a steady cast of characters, Golden Surrender is the perfect beach read. The Lord of the Wolves waylays and seduces (eventually) Erin the beauteous Irish Princess in this bodice ripper. Historical and geographical research come into play and the book trips along smoothly. A word to the wise: not an intellectual read, to be sure. But it is entertaining and painless. What fascinated me is Ms. Graham's ability to use the Irish thread in uncanny ways. Her bank of writing brings the Irish as a nation, as a mythology into the forefront, by using the past, and entwining the reader into contemporary fantastical tales.
During the Summertime I like to read books that are entertaining and sort of indulgent. Not everything you read has to be life changing. One can read for pure entertainment. I love Golden Surrender because it has a really strong leading lady that suffers the ultimate betrayal by her father. He betrothed her to families worst enemy. This tale of is full of seduction that is an easy and enjoyable read. From enemies to lovers, this story is perfect for diving into by the pool.
