Here's the light at the end of your dock. We love the green light reflected in the dark water.
There is none greater than The Great Gatsby, and avid readers have heard it's Peachy Deegan's favorite book. Our friends at BBC Home Entertainment have hit another out of the park with The Great Gatsby: Midnight in Manhattan. This piece by BBC Home Entertainment truly reflects the spirit created by Fitzgerald of American dreams, aspirations, ideals and making it all a reality. There is no place like Manhattan to do this, and when Peachy was growing up in Connecticut reading The Great Gatsby the first few dozen times she imagined a place that is represented in this great work. Fitzgerald also realized the beauty of opportunity in Manhattan from St. Paul, Minnesota and he set his sites on our current geographic area way before The Great Gatsby came about.
As it was originally released in 2000, which coincidentally was the year Peachy came to New York to work for Lehman Brothers, The Great Gatsby: Midnight in Manhattan includes great footage of the Twin Towers as they once stood. It has a bi-coastal presence as well (note to our California readers!) with a great feature of Frances Kroll Ring, F. Scott Fitzgerald's own personal secretary until his death including the dates April 1939-December 1940.
We know that the 1920's was one endless party that most of us missed, and brilliant commentary by Jay McInerney (up with born in Hartford people), Matthew Bruccoli, George Plimpton and Harold Bloom are priceless additions as well, enlightening the viewer with their takes.
It is not all champagne and highballs however, and the bubble bursting in 1929 with Zelda's first nervous breakdown was included, giving the viewer a holistic picture. We can't help but draw parallels from the Jazz Age and the Depression to this time when The Great Gatsby: Midnight in Manhattan was originally released to the economic collapse that started here sadly in 2008. We have confidence that America will triumph once again. (Go brands manufacturing in the USA!!!)
We also found the piece on Bill Gates as a modern Gatsby entertaining.
Most importantly, BBC Home Entertainment has great footage of Eleanor Lanahan, the granddaughter of F. Scott and Zelda.
For great Fitzgerald fans, we have also found this great site in our endless Fitzgerald devotion that may be of interest to you that has been started by his family:
Aside from Eleanor, the most gorgeous cinematography that is in keeping with the quality that the BBC is committed to is unparalleled. We won't give it all away-we want you to see it for yourselves.

Length: Approx. 49 mins + bonus material / single disc
BBC Home Entertainment announces the North American premiere of the documentary The Great Gatsby: Midnight In Manhattan, on DVD on May 7, 2013. The novel The Great Gatsby has only increased in popularity since it was initially published in 1925, with its author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, holding nearly as much of the public’s fascination. An emblem of the roaring ‘20s, Fitzgerald’s personal story is as interesting as his writing. With narration from Tara Fitzgerald and featuring contributions by the author’s granddaughter Eleanor Lanahan, plus writers Hunter S. Thompson, George Plimpton, Jay McInerney, and more, this program presents a fascinating portrait of this enduring American icon.
The Great Gatsby: Midnight In Manhattan, produced in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of The Great Gatsby for the BBC’s acclaimed art series Omnibus, explores the life and dark creative spirit of its writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald. It examines his disappointing college days at Princeton, his difficult relationship with fellow author Ernest Hemingway, and his turbulent last days in Hollywood. It dispels the age-old mythology surrounding Fitzgerald, largely created by himself, which tends to glamorize the Jazz-Age and his alcoholism.
Also included is the bonus feature Private Affairs: A Dream Of Living, a play that looks at the lives of F. Scott Fitzgerald, his wife Zelda, and Ernest Hemingway in 1925 Paris. As a companion piece to the central documentary, this dramatization brings to life the personalities of Scott and Zelda as well as the time period that produced “The Great Gatsby.”
