This review is for the Skipper we know who for decades has worked hard to build the best planes in the world. Peachy and Skipper love Disney world and breakfast with the animals.
Spoiler Alert!
Planes is without a doubt the best Disney movie we've seen in quite a long time and it should be at the tip top of your "must do" list starting on August 9th! We predict a huge blockbuster. Planes is even in 3D-you'll sport the glasses- and the soaring excitement is even better than what you saw in Disney's Cars, thought that was also quite good. It is coming from the world of Cars. Adults and children alike will adore the flawless animation, the convincing voices behind each character, and a heartfelt story that teaches a great life lesson: if you think you can do it and are determined, persistent, act intelligently and execute, dreams can come true.
You should know that this movie is equally terrific for both boys and girls and girls can play with planes too.
Our favorite character is of course Skipper who is a Corsair, a Connecticut plane we are told by the Skipper we know and it happens to be his favorite plane too. He had nothing to do with this movie...
We noticed that there was a huge commitment to aviation accuracy in this film which we applaud being taken seriously, even though it is clearly an animated fun flick.
If you are a fan of Top Gun, you will be thrilled to know that Goose (Anthony Edwards) has come back to life and along with Iceman (Val Kilmer) takes you on the highway to the Danger Zone....but now they go by call signs Bravo and Echo. Maverick what happened to you? Are you too busy with Charlie?
See, it is not just for kids because if you were around to see Top Gun in 1986, presumably you are no longer a child.
Planes centers around the story of Dusty,
(voice of Dane Cook) who has dreams of competitive flying. In real life, picture the Red Bull planes racing each other and that's the kind of flying Dusty wants to participate in, however, he's just a little cropduster plane, and the reality is that Dusty is not built for the high flying cutthroat tricks and levels of speed achieved by mightier models.
Lessons can be learned about bullying, as the monstrous planes like the meany Ripslinger both physically and verbally push Dusty around, aiming to break his tenacious spirit.
But Dusty doesn't listen to them. Ever Doug Flutie-like, Dusty shows the high-flying world that little planes can pull a Hail Mary too, and vys for a competitive position and lands at number six in his inaugural race. Dusty's friends at the farm like Leadbottom,
and Dottie,
let him know it's ok to be himself. Dottie, the star mechanic, actually becomes worried about Dusty's mechanical "health" as he takes bigger and bigger risks. Dusty's pals want the best for him, and support him in what whatever he does. They show the true meaning of friendship, being there for him in his loss as they only accepted the first five finishers in the pre-race to advance.
Dusty is in luck however, as the flashy, obnoxious Fonzarelli plane who placed fifth actually pulls an A-Rod! He is eliminated due to illegal activity, and guess who slides into fifth place and has the opportunity of a lifetime! Yes, it's our friend Dusty and with some great mentoring from the sage Skipper, who's flown the skies before, Dusty is on his way around the world to an adventure that will fascinate all audiences. His farm friends make the best marketing team!
The best line:
"It ain't how fast you fly, it how you fly fast!"
Also remember, when the front door doesn't work, try the side door...
The top competition that the rivaling racers in the sky participate in takes us around the world, so Planes celebrates cultural diversity as well. With a start in New York, they then travel to Iceland, Germany, India, Nepal, China and Mexico and the finish line is of course in the capital of the world, New York. We can see this movie doing very well all around the world.
It is interesting to note that Disney even captured the ESPN-like aspect of it all which made Planes even more fun.
There were some female planes as well that were competitive but mainly used as love interests. We liked Dottie the best of the girls because she's smart and sets the best example. Also, Planes teaches great lessons about overcoming adversity which should be inspirational to all ages.
When flying around the world, Dusty befriends colleagues as well as the Mexican El Chupacabra and the English Bulldog, proving Dusty's social skills extend beyond the farm. These characters also paint convincing pictures of friendship that you will value for children watching.
Kenny Loggins said you'll never know what you can do until you can get it up as high as you can go....so tune in and see what Dusty can do! Will he be able to compete? Does he have the right stuff like the career racers? Let's see how Dusty flies fast.
Come fly with us! You'll be uplifted in so many ways. They've got rhythm, they've got great music in this film, they've got altitude who could ask for anything more?
Whom You Know Highly Recommends Planes.
When you wish upon a star your dreams do come true thank you Disney!
