This Adrenaline-Inducing Action Thriller Is Recommended by Whom You Know! Our Coverage Sponsored by Grimaldi’s Pizza
Originally started as one location underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, Grimaldi’s Pizza is one of the legends of New York pizza. The business of Grimaldi’s pizza has grown today to nearly 50 locations in America led by seven locations in the New York Metropolitan area including New Jersey and also including locations nationally in Arizona, Florida, Nevada, South Carolina and Texas. Recently, Grimaldi’s Limelight was raved about on Whom You Know:
Designed and built by hand, the coal-fired oven at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria delivers a unique flavor and consistency that is just not possible from wood or gas ovens. Weighing in at 25 tons and heated by 100 pounds of coal per day (the cleanest burning fuel available and environmentally tested), the oven heats up to 1200 degrees. Grimaldi's also purchases special coal from Pennsylvania called anthracite. It actually burns cleaner and is more Eco-friendly than gas or wood-fired methods. The intense heat of the oven and coal evenly bakes the pies to create Grimaldi’s crispy and smoky crust that have become famous.
What would you do to save someone you love? Starting off with a jolt, Getaway answers that very question in the course of this ninety-minute adrenaline-inducing thriller that will have you absolutely sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time. Forget about casually munching on popcorn, you will be sucked into its intensity from the start as star Ethan Hawke as Brent Magna convincingly draws you in with both his expert driving skills and emotionally anguished condition, as his wife has been kidnapped and her existence depends on his driving ability behind the wheel of the Shelby GT 500 Super Snake Mustang. This car will be much to the delight of American car enthusiasts everywhere and anyone who has a need for speed. Not since Magnum P.I. drove the Ferrari has there been a creative endeavor on the screen so winning for a brand. Between the racing we saw recently as the Gatsby dvd was released this week and Getaway, we're not sure there is a more appropriate distribution company paying homage to speed than Warner Brothers right now!
The premise of the plot is simple: stay away from the police, and Bret's wife will not be harmed so says the voice.
In action, it's not as simple as the words and not only does it speak louder, it roars thunderously with American horsepower.

Set in Sofia, Bulgaria today, Getaway majors in stunts. If you like speed or played with Hot Wheels (Peachy had them; girls love cars too), this is the movie for you. If you like excitement, sign up now. And if you like to be entertained, Warner Brothers Pictures is leading the way this weekend. Thanks to Charlie Picerni, Sr, Stunt Coordinator/Action Choreographer, to say the action is stellar would be an understatement. Picerni's resume includes the Die Hard series (Bruce Willis), the Lethal Weapon Series (Mel Gibson, Danny Glover) and Demolition Man (Sylvester Stallone.) The list could go on and on but the point is if you are up for action, it doesn't get any better than this. If you are old enough to remember Starsky and Hutch, Charlie was Paul Michael Glaser's stunt double.
Not only were the stunts well thought out, but also they were captured with beaucoup de angles as to catch all of the action, the Shelby used a variety of cameras ranging from 18 to 42 in any given scene. Parts of Getaway remind us of the intensity we saw in Taken (Liam Neeson) but this time, with an automobile twist. Hawke even attended racing school in preparation for this movie which evidences his dedication to the role.

In contrast to movies that have cut after cut from scene to scene, when you consider how most of this movie takes place in a car, for the movie to succeed the two people in the car have got to have great chemistry and be top actors. Ethan Hawke with his experience and raw emotion delivers a winning performance here, and baby-faced Selena Gomez, referred to as the kid, stands her ground in this inaugural phase of her acting career. It happens to take place during Christmas so that happy aspect is strikingly different from the pure terror that encompass the gravity of each turn Brent takes with the kid truly wishing he had not "stolen" her graduation present. Is this the most wonderful time of the year for everyone? Clearly not. Hawke has incomparable reaction qualities and times throughout and him nailing each sealed each scene with feeling and the heartbeat of his wife continued.
As the film progresses, Brent and the kid forge a bond unique to the situation they are found in as they appeal to the whim of the highly creepy antagonist, played by Jon Voight. Avid readers know he was recently featured in our Small Screen Scenes feature on HBO Documentaries Casting By, where Marion Dougherty went to bat for him in Midnight Cowboy. In Getaway, every vile off-color tooth and menacing eye showed the audience up close how severe and punishing Voight can be as an actor...he was so evil we wanted to pick up his martini and dump it on him.
Explosions, road pizzas and disasters galore marked each segment. The kid turns out to be quite the techy which comes in just as handy as the expert driving. The sounds in this movie were authentic: actual engines were racing, gears were shifting, rubber was burning and be assured glass was shattering. We understand Getaway used virtually no green screen or CGI which is most impressive.
...and as far as believing in yourself, well you'll just have to see the movie to see where that thought comes in.
