Catch a wave & this book and you'll be sitting on top of the world. Don't be afraid to try the greatest book around, everybody tries it once and they can't put it down. The pages turn and your interest is raised, and baby that's all there is to this summer reading craze (both coastline and in the middle of America!); you've got to catch this book and you'll be sitting on top of the world.
Aruba, Jamaica, ooh we're gonna take ya between some of the best pages we've ever seen by Backbeat Books an Imprint of Hal Leonard Corporation containing the most comprehensive history of this legendary group that we LOVE. We have reviewed a myriad of books by this top publisher over the years, and often the subject matter is not one Peachy has had extensive knowledge of, until now. Guess who was singing Help Me Rhonda at a very young age? Guess who's father sang Surfer Girl to her? Guess who went to the Beach Boys concert at the Oakdale in Wallingford every time they visited Connecticut? You guessed right. We know most every Beach Boys song ever made because we grew up listening to them. Peachy's dad surely knows every single one. A concert poster of Mike Love with Dean of Jan and Dean is framed and on the wall in the house where Peachy grew up. And as an adult Peachy chooses to listen to the Beach Boys herself as well because they are the best American band in history and are still going strong. Peachy enjoyed learning about the details of their early history that preceded her birth, and wanted to see if she could find the shows mentioned that she had been to which was great fun. Very impressive to see this book goes right up to 2012! We love how orderly this is, and we love that both the story and verbiage are as good as the pictures which you don't always seen in a coffee table kind of book. We definitely remember John Stamos playing with them. Though this is a beautiful coffee table kind of book and you might not want to get it dirty, if you have a clean beach to go to we suggest you pop this in your bag for premium beach reading.
Our esteemed panel says:
In the history of popular music, there are countless famous groups, but few that make it to the status of iconic. The Beach Boys are one of the elite few, and in The Beach Boys In Concert: The Ultimate History of America's Band On Tour and Onstage, authors Ian Rusten and Jon Stebbins do a fantastic job of chronicling the legendary band's performances over the years. Unbelievably, the Beach Boys have performed live every year since 1961, so there is a wealth of information included in the book. From their beginnings as "The Pendletones" (unbeknownst to them, the record company changed their name when they pressed their first single, "Surfin'") to their status of one of the most successful American bands ever, the Beach Boys took quite a journey, and thanks to Rusten and Stebbins, readers have a chance to follow that journey, step by step! The book contains a running narration of the Beach Boys' story along the margins of the pages, with details about each of their live performances in the centers of the pages. There are pictures aplenty, including previously unpublished photographs and rare images of memorabilia. Throughout the years, there were many well-publicized low points for the band, and Rusten and Stebbins don't try to sugar-coat them, but neither do they dwell on them - they're simply included as part of the colorful history of the band. The perfect gift for any lover of pop music, The Beach Boys In Concert will keep readers entertained and engaged from start to finish - and will keep them revisiting the stories and pictures many, many times!
Friday, February 12, 1965. The Beach Boys on stage, and me in the balcony of the Philadelphia Convention Center, for my very first live concert. Sitting by myself, not knowing anyone around me, something happened that would transform me for life. The Beach Boys came at a moment in time when we had all been primed by television. Our generation became exposed to British bands, Elvis and our very own American music thanks to the Ed Sullivan Show. We were all speaking the same language, and live performances became the lifeline to that beat, that crucial connection to one shared breath. From that concert, where the Beach Boys lit up the stage and sealed my fate as a music lover forever (yes, my Mother had had a hand in it, too!), this book traces their entire career. From playing at Milton Berle's birthday party in the early days, to their reunion concerts, and all the years of touring in between, this is a bible of tour dates. Magnanimous, including spin-off tours by the individual members of this All-American band, it's a Herculean task in a book. All the years of their free-wheeling California sound is in here, city by city, date by date, year by year. Ian Rusten and John Stebbins have done it! Published by Backbeat Books, this is an encyclopedia of tour dates, and an exemplary show of fan determination. Music historians will thank them, and that little girl in the balcony thanks them, too.
The Beach Boys are one of those all-time classic summertime bands. Although they were a bit before my time, I have very fond childhood memories of listening to their albums in the car on drives to the ice cream parlor with my parents (who are cousins with Peachy's dad hence the family taste). I cannot tell you how excited I was when I found out a new book was published about them. The Beach Boys in Concert, by Ian Rusten and Jon Stebbins, takes the reader on an entertaining and informative journey with the band through the years of 1961 to 2012. The book begins with the band's humble beginnings and follows them all the way though to their blockbuster successes and worldwide fame. The book is filled with mountains of facts and photos documenting the band's accomplishments and trials and tribulations. Many of the photographs were previously unpublished. So turn on The Beach Boys' Endless Summer and start flipping through this great book!
I grew up listening to great music thanks to my dad. One of his favorites groups was The Beach Boys. I was so excited when I saw "The Beach Boys in Concert: The Ultimate History of America's Band on Tour and Onstage" by Ian Rusten and Jon Stebbins. If you are a fan of the Beach Boys, you must own this book. I had to pry it out my dad's hands so that I could look through it first (of course, I will share with him when I am done...and I will probably never see it again!). This book is a comprehensive, 400 page masterpiece. Rusten and Stebbins take the readers on a journey spanning five decades detailing concert dates, concert locations, previously unpublished photos, and more. The amount of information in this one book is staggering! I highly recommend "The Beach Boys in Concert: The Ultimate History of America's Band on Tour and Onstage" by Ian Rusten and Jon Stebbins to any Beach Boy fan...you will not be disappointed!
The Beach Boys in Concert follows one of rock history’s most legendary acts through their day-by-day extravaganzas. This book has every live performance the band has played since 1961. Along with the date, the book includes what the concert was benefiting, time and special guests. The book also includes summaries of every concert whether it was a great success or a tragedy. This book takes you through the whole career of the Beach Boys, starting with opening for other bands, to playing local gigs all the way to travelling in luxury to preform for die-hard fans. The Beach Boys in Concert also includes a wide collection of unpublished photos and rare memorabilia that all fans would adore! As a reader myself, I loved that fact that I could open up to any page and start reading from there. This book is highly recommended and is definitely the ultimate book for fans of the Beach Boys.
Who doesn't love the Beach Boys? One of America's best bands comes alive in the fabulous new coffee table book "The Beach Boys in Concert: The Ultimate History of America's Band on Tour and Onstage". These surf pop legends' story jumps off each page with amazing photos and stories. This is a must have for all fans. It features beautiful photos, stories and memorabilia images, many you will be seeing for the first time. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is that it details the Beach Boys days, year by year, listing every show they played, the reviews they received and more. It's a fascinating read to see them from their start to world-wide game. This is a wonderful gift for all Beach Boy fans in your life, or a great book for your summer beach house.

The Beach Boys have been a
fixture of the American music scene since their iconic album Pet Sounds was released in 1966. The
band has performed live every year since 1961. In The Beach Boys in Concert: The
Ultimate History of America’s Band on Tour and Onstage (Backbeat Books,
July 15, $39.99), Ian Rusten and Jon Stebbins cover the incredible five-decade
touring journey in a day-by-day format that includes not only dates, locations,
and other acts, but also thumbnail highlights or quotes for each concert.
The Beach Boys in
Concert
details the Beach Boys’ thrilling successes, personal tragedies, interband
dramas, and globe-trotting rock-and-roll adventures from their humble
beginnings in 1961 to their reunion in 2012. Previously unpublished photographs
and rare memorabilia images bring fans deeper into the context of any given era
covered in the book. Each chapter is dedicated to one year, showing the full
evolution of this entertainment phenomenon in a way that has never been done
before.
The book is rife
with stories on how the Beach Boys grew from a simple surf-pop band singing
about the California sun to producing the album that inspired Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Rusten
and Stebbins don’t shy away from showing the low points of the band, but they
don’t dwell on the sensationalist aspects of the Beach Boys’ colorful past. The
Beach Boys in Concert is an exhilarating ride through the group’s
career as concert performers and American legends.
