A bagel is not just a bagel. There is a wide range of qualities of bagels in Manhattan, and few are among the elite. In this elite group is Tal Bagels at 977 First Avenue. Open since June 1988, Tal Bagels boasts fresh, delicious bagels that are enjoyed in a variety of ways that Peachy Deegan recently experienced. Our resident bagel monster loves scallion cream cheese on an onion or a garlic bagel and that is what you see above. Rich creamy cheese with a generous portion of scallions danced between the two sides of bagel bliss, silencing her as she entered her own private bagel heaven. This was a truly spectacular incarnation of her favorite bagel and it did not last long.
As we get closer to lunchtime perhaps you want a sandwich, not just cream cheese. Tal Bagels has that covered too. No one is going to say where's the lunchmeat here, and they use Boar's Head and are committed to quality ingredients across the board. Smoked turkey, swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo enhanced the top plain bagel making for a perfect lunch. Though we wanted it cold, it would also be lovely with the swiss melting a bit.
Other than her favorite variety pictured at the top, the Chunky Chicken Salad proved to be the best in Peachy's opinion at Tal Bagels. Chicken salad would not be something she think she'd like but be advised: it is truly phenomenal at Tal Bagels. Do not be too chicken to order it! The chunks are truly chunks and the mayo is in the right proportion. With Lettuce and Tomato, it is fresh, and it is addictive. There is only one kind of mayonnaise that Peachy eats and that is Hellmann's (we don't even work with them and have not featured them but you know they are the best) and so we asked is that used? Yes, of course it is silly. We said they only used the best and we checked for you.
We know that Peachy listens to the angel on her shoulder named Bloomberg who is eager to chime in with nutritional tips when we do this and you should know the salads at Tal Bagels are tops. Celery, chic peas, romaine, cherry tomato, cucumbers, red peppers, carrots, mushrooms and even raisins proved that they have variety and freshness when it comes to salad. You need to have a salad with your bagel, and you can put whatever your little heart desires in it.
On an everything bagel, we next tried the quintessential New York bagel: Nova, Capers, Red Onion, and Tomato had a party on our plate and ultimately in our stomach. It totally hit the spot and if you have not had this variety and are not from here and do not live here, do live a little when you frequent Manhattan and go to Tal Bagels and try it!
Last but certainly not least, we tried the Tuna with Provolone on Sesame. Every bite was pure bliss and everything was in the right proportion. As you can tell nothing is skimped on here and though this is a casual spot, detail is king. New York water may make all the difference in bagels here and Tal Bagels confirmed that, but you need to know that all bagels are not equal. Some are just superior.
