Our First Mover and Shaker Dr. Garo Nazarian Travels to Rural Armenia Providing Free Dental care for Orphaned and Disadvantaged Children BRAVO GARO!

In case you were reading Whom You Know early in 2009, the very first person interviewed was Peachy's friend Garo from her Boston College class.  As you know from all of our Top Teeth features this is the place to go in New York (and anyone new reading us from the NHL who needs a dentist, Garo is up to speed on hockey talk and welcomes all hockey-enthused patients) but in addition to his illustrious expertise, it is important for you to all know about his charitable trip he takes every year.

Over the past six summers Dr. Nazarian has had the opportunity to spend two weeks at a camp in rural Armenia providing free dental care for orphaned and disadvantaged children. Camp, or "jambar" as it is known in Armenian has become one of the many programs set up through the Church of Armenia for orphans as well as the underprivileged. Similar to many of the summer camps in the United States, the children develop friendships and memories that are both invaluable and last a lifetime. One of the more unique aspects of the camp, along with the regular day to day camp activities, is the opportunity for the children to receive dental care performed by passionate and dedicated dentists and volunteers from all over the world.

Dr. Nazarian recently returned from his August 2013 Dental Outreach Trip. What a joy it was to return and see many of the previous year's camp staff and the volunteer dentists from all over the world. This year's August team included Drs. Viken Garabedian and Charles Tatosian of Laguna Niguel, CA, Dr. Armand Begian of Oxnard, CA and Dr. Joyce Kurdian of Basking Ridge New Jersey. Hundreds of cavities were filled, dozens of teeth were treated with root canal therapy, and all the children were given full exams, cleaning and preventative teeth treatments. All of this using the most up to date techniques and the latest in materials that each of the team members brought with them to the camp in their luggage this year!

Dr. Nazarian is grateful for his experience at camp this summer and in his words, "The rewards of volunteer work have been life-changing for me. The friends I have made, the memories, the appreciation, and love received from the children we have treated, as well as the feelings of self-satisfaction and fulfillment, are truly priceless."
