DAYLIGHT: Washington Capitals Defenseman Nate Schmidt and Alumnus Paul Mulvey Participate in Playworks Washington, D.C., Hockey Extravaganza October 18, 2013
Washington Capitals defenseman Nate Schmidt, alumnus Paul Mulvey and mascot Slapshot participated in the Playworks Washington, D.C., Hockey Extravaganza at J.O. Wilson on October 18, 2013. The extravaganza served as the launch for the Playworks co-ed street hockey league, a pilot program with students from Arts and Technology Academy Public Charter School, Bruce Monroe Elementary School, Smothers Elementary School, West Education Campus and J.O. Wilson Elementary School.
Schmidt, Mulvey and Slapshot played street hockey with students from four of the participating schools, many of whom have never played the sport before. Students were split into groups and participated in stations focusing on hockey skills such as stickhandling, passing and shooting. Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation donated the street hockey equipment that is being used by the schools in the Playworks hockey league.
“It was great teaching the students about hockey,” said Schmidt. “There were a lot of great players today and they seemed to enjoy the sport. I hope they have fun with the equipment.”
In June, Monumental Sports & Entertainment announced the formation of a partnership between MSE Foundation and Playworks Washington, D.C., through which MSE foundation will provide a $50,000 grant and programming to the organization for the 2013-14 school year. Playworks is a national nonprofit organization that transforms schools by providing play and physical activity at recess and throughout the school day. Its mission is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play. Playworks currently partners with 15 public and public charter schools in Washington, D.C., serving 5,500 students each day.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation supports the charitable efforts of the professional teams under its umbrella: the Washington Capitals, Mystics and Wizards. MSE is committed to the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and focuses on the following five pillars to maximize its impact on the community: education and scholarship, hunger and homelessness, military and veterans’ affairs, pediatric health and fitness and youth basketball and hockey. In 2013 Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation, along with the Leonsis Foundation, will donate more than $1.5 million to local charities. Nearly $1,000,000 has been donated to date.
