The New York Landmarks Conservancy Presents: Tourist In Your Own Town #20: Museum at Eldridge Street
The Museum at Eldridge Street is housed in an 1887 restored synagogue located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This awe-inspiring Moorish, Gothic and Romanesque building was the first great house of worship built by Eastern European Jews settling in New York. Though the sanctuary was closed in the 1950s, the restored building continues to be used for religious services, education, events and programs such as immigration history. A must-see for the renovation tour is the monumental stained-glass window that was a collaboration by artist Kiki Smith and architect Deborah Gans.
