It's that time of year when everyone is at their most spooky, and BBC Home Entertainment has emerged with a huge hit sure to freak you out of your mind, especially if you are a parent. The mood of scary is not always easily achieved on screen; some can make it too horrific and others show a side of scary that is forced and thus insincere. In The Secret of Crickley Hall, actors are all spot-on in their performances drawing the viewer in immediately. The contrast between the two successful time sequences is exhilarating and you'll find yourself trying to figure out the relationships and drawing parallels to solve the mystery along with the protagonists. Who's crazy and who's not? I had to watch the entire three episodes in a row or I wouldn't have been able to sleep. Who's naughty? Who's nice? Who can be trusted? What secrets have been buried deep, and where? Even if you think you don't like to be creeped out, when you start seeing this superlatively done thriller you'll become a bigger fan of scary than ever.
I was on the edge of my seat from START to FINISH! Considering this is an almost-three-hour mini-series, that’s quite a statement. The first half hour was so creepy, I had to call my boyfriend over for reinforcement (aka – a hand to squeeze). I literally jumped every time I heard a “THWACK”. The story follows parallel stories of a present-day family (The Caleighs) whose son went missing almost a year prior and a WWII orphanage. When the Caleighs move into Crickley Hall, the old orphanage, creepy and inexplicable things start to happen. As the stories wind back and forth, we learn more about what happened at the orphanage, while getting the strange feeling that the story isn’t yet over. We are kept wondering what the connection is, and whether the Caleigh’s son will turn up at the old orphanage. This is an engaging and creepy (have I mentiomed the word “creepy” yet?) story. There’s no gore – which is nice – but plenty of hints and action to keep you in sufficient horror at what will happen next.
BBC Home Entertainment consistently provides viewers with high quality programming. No matter what the genre, every program of theirs that I've had the pleasure of viewing has been a winner, and The Secret of Crickley Hall is no different. Originally produced as a 3-part miniseries, The Secret of Crickley Hall is available in the form of a single DVD, which makes breezing through each of the three parts a cinch. Of course, this intriguing thriller is so captivating, you may find yourself watching it all in one sitting, as I did! Based on the best-selling 2006 novel by James Herbert, this good, old-fashioned ghost story begins with the disappearance of Cam, the young son of Gabe and Eva Caleigh (played by Tom Ellis and Suranne Jones, respectively). Eva has taken Cam to the playground and briefly dozing off while trying to get some work done as Cam plays. She snaps awake, and Cam has vanished without a trace. As the one-year anniversary of his disappearance approaches, Tom and Eva move to a house in the country with their two daughters and their dog, hoping for a fresh start. However, the new house, Crickley Hall, proves to be a far cry from the escape from which they were hoping. Wails of children resound in the night, a spinning top falls inexplicably from a shelf, an abusive, cane-wielding ghost stalks the house at night, and Eva swears that she can hear Cam's voice. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn that Crickley Hall was originally an orphanage in the 1940s, run by an abusive, maniacal headmaster, Augustus Cribben, and his sister, Magda (played by Douglas Henshall and Sarah Smart, respectively. New teacher Nancy Linnet (played by Olivia Cooke), is appalled by the abuses at the orphanage and takes it upon herself to try to save the children. The tension rises as both stories escalate towards their climax, and ultimately, viewers are enlightened as to how the history of Crickley Hall is closely connected with the present. A spooky, suspenseful thriller, The Secret of Crickley Hall is yet another winner from BBC Home Entertainment, and a perfect movie to watch in the Halloween season!

THE SECRET OF CRICKLEY HALL
Length: Approx. 180 mins/ single disc
Based on the novel by best-selling author James Herbert, this bone-chilling thriller begins a year after the disappearance of 5-year-old Cam Caleigh. Cam’s parents, Gabe (Tom Ellis, The Fades) and Eve (Suranne Jones, Doctor Who), seek a new start for their family by moving to Crickley Hall – a seemingly perfect countryside house. But when Eve begins to hear Cam’s cries and a frenzied cane-wielding specter goes after their terrified daughters, the Caleighs realize that the house comes with a lot more than they bargained for… The story shifts between the present day and 1943, when the house was an orphanage for children who had been evacuated from London during the war and run by the frightening Augustus Cribben (Douglas Henshall, Primeval). As past and present come together, the Caleighs desperately race to unravel the mystery of the house and its connection to their missing son before the evil that stalks Crickley Hall claims their other children. Also starring Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), BBC AMERICA’s classic haunted house thriller is full of scares, yet underpinned by the heartbreaking story of a family that needs to heal, and ghosts who need to be laid to rest.
