Washington Capitals Alumni Alan May and Ken Sabourin to Visit St. Mary’s School in Landover Hills, Maryland, on October 23, 2013
Washington Capitals alumni Alan May and Ken Sabourin will visit St. Mary’s School in Landover Hills, Maryland at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 the Washington Capitals announced today.
May and Sabourin are participating in a Capitals Hockey School assembly. Hockey School is a free instructional and interactive program that aims to expose students to floor hockey while teaching proper technique. May and Sabourin will direct a floor hockey session in the school’s gymnasium with 150 elementary school students.
During the assembly May and Sabourin will participate in a question-and-answer session and lead a skills demonstration. They will guide students through drills focusing on stickhandling, passing and shooting prior to inviting students to demonstrate what they learned in front of their classmates. The clinic will conclude with students participating in a brief scrimmage with May and Sabourin.
May played with the Capitals from 1989-1994 as a left wing. He currently serves as a hockey analyst for Comcast SportsNet.
Sabourin played two seasons with the Capitals from 1990-1992 as a defenseman. He currently serves as a radio analyst for the Capitals Radio Network.
Following the clinic, the Capitals will donate a set of street hockey equipment to the school and provide each student with an autographed May or Sabourin card, a hockey 101 booklet and a squishy puck. St. Mary’s School will also receive a Capitals Hockey School banner to display in their school gymnasium.
The visit marks the first Capitals Hockey School assembly of the 2013-14 season. The Capitals will host one Hockey School visits each month between October and May and donate street hockey equipment to each participating school.
The 2013-14 season marks the seventh consecutive year the Capitals have conducted their Hockey School program. The Capitals have hosted more than 70 clinics and reached more than 10,000 students in the past five years.
