Tell the City Council that you want a better plan for Midtown East.
On the eve of a City Council vote on the Midtown East rezoning proposal, The New York Times has once again published an editorial finding flaws with the plan. The Times writes that there are four areas that need to be addressed: Preservation, Transit, Air Rights and Public Spaces. This plan will leave significant historic buildings at risk:
“Much of the existing neighborhood, while aging, is serviceable, built to human scale and containing elegant older buildings, including the Graybar Building and the Yale Club, to name only two. It is not clear at the moment exactly how they can be protected from developers eager to move skyward as quickly as possible.”
The New York Times editorial board, New York Times architecture critic, Manhattan Institute, a coalition of Community Boards, and the City Club have joined preservation groups to say that this is not the right plan for Midtown East. (Read More).
This is the very last chance for your voice to be heard. The Council will be voting this week, and if the plan passes, the public’s voice will be silenced on Midtown East. If you have already written to your Council Member or signed our petition, thank you. If you have not, take a moment, read about the buildings that are threatened and the other flaws with this plan, and let the Council know that Midtown East, and New York, deserve better.
