More than ever, the USA needs to go back to traditional values and look at the classics that shaped our lives. Hans Christian Andersen tells the classic story of “The Snow Queen” from the BBC Home Entertainment DVD. With a great cast from Patrick Stewart to Sydney White, you will get lost in this fairytale and be transported to another era and world. Plus, music from the Royal Philharmonic perfectly sets the mood throughout the movie and gives it even greater depth. Magic and Mystery teamed up with friendship and never giving up are the leading themes throughout the movie. Great story for both adults and children. My favorite were all of the scary creatures that they encounter on their mystical journey. Great costumes and sets as well as make-up. So as it gets colder in the North East, cuddle up in front of the fire with your family and watch the wonderful tale of “The Snow Queen”. A perfect classic to own and enjoy!  A great Christmas gift as well!

Magical for any time of year, but so appropriate for the holiday season, The Snow Queen, by BBC Home Entertainment sets a wintry mood. Hans Christian Andersen gave us the plot in his original fairy tale, and BBC Home Entertainment recreates the fantasy for children of all ages. Shot against a blue screen, with sets that project a quaint picturesque background, the tale begins with Kay, a street urchin. He is saved by the kinkiness of Gerda and her Mother, only to be ultimately taken by the Snow Queen. Gerda sets off to the icy far away kingdom. On her way, a lively collection of characters help and guide her. The familiar and soothing voice of Patrick Stewart lends credence to the wise words of the symbolic raven, who accompanies Gerda along the way. As stories go, the children make their way home once again, and safe, never to fear the icy clutches of the Snow Queen again. Or we all hope.
Paul Joyce wrote an encompassing emotional score. The work was directed by Julian Gibbs, and in their able hands, the Snow Queen developed into an opera, performed separately as a concert. Now available on DVD, there are background notes by the director and actors, with rarely share footage of how it was all made. Fascinating as a piece for a night by a cozy fire, and educational for young minds to see the work of their peers.

BBC Home Entertainment has a reputation for providing stellar products, and their newly-released The Snow Queen is yet another winner. Originally made as a television movie in 2005, The Snow Queen is a beautiful and fascinating escape into a world of fancy. The movie is actually based on a stage version of The Snow Queen, which, itself, was an adaption of the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale! The plot of the tale centers around young Gerda (winningly played by Sydney White), who, along with her mother (played by Juliet Stevenson), takes in a young homeless boy named Kay (played by Pax Baldwin). When Kay ends up being kidnapped by the Snow Queen (Tiffany Amber Knight) and taken to her palace, Gerda is determined to save him. Gerda's quest to rescue her friend takes her on a dangerous journey, and her courage, faith, and strength are put to the test, but her love for her friend carries her through. An engaging and enchanting tale, this movie is simply gorgeous to watch, and the accompanying music is hauntingly beautiful. The entire movie clocks in at a mere 56 minutes, making it a great choice for families with little ones with shorter attention spans! This heartwarming story is sure to be a winner with children and adults alike, and will keep viewers engaged and entertained from beginning to end. Highly recommended!

If you enjoy the “Chronicles of Narnia”-type genre, this is perfect for you! It’s a sweet, yet adventurous tale. The story follows Gerta, a young girl, and her new friend, Kay, whom Gerta and her mother bring in out of the snow and share their meager, but warm home. They become quick and best friends. When Kay abruptly disappears, Gerta embarks on a quest to find him. With the guidance of a crow and some other helpers, Gerta winds her way through several challenges. You follow her through enchanted gardens with talking flowers and icy nether-realms with a helpful and courageous moose before she finds Kay and races to save him from the Snow Queen. The filming is incredibly unique with a mixture of sketching and live action. This all adds to the storybook, fairytale feel. Adults and kids alike will enjoy this tale, which is tame enough for younger kids, yet adventurous enough to engage the adults!

Who doesn't love a classic story? I was absolutely thrilled to watch the Snow Queen by BBC Home Entertainment. This Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale is brought to life in a fantastic display. It's a unique spin on the classic production.  We are brought into the world of a mother and daughter who take in a homeless boy, who soon disappears, kidnapped by an evil snow queen. A true artistic masterpiece with a beautiful score and delightful animation. The actors appear to be walking in a vivid world of fantasy, jumping off the screen at you. The digital technology used creates a beautiful story. It is as if the viewer was brought into this stunning alternative universe. Viewers of all ages will be entertained by the Snow Queen by BBC Home Entertainment. This would make a lovely holiday gift for the children in your life. Be prepared to be amazed by this enchanting tale.
