Canadian Abstraction: An Selling Exhibition at Sotheby's New York S|2 Gallery

As part of its winter S|2 programming, Sotheby’s is pleased to present Canadian Abstraction, a selling exhibition of mid-century Canadian abstract art in New York. This will be the first exhibition of its kind outside of Canada in decades and will highlight some of the best examples of works by members of the Automatistes, Plasticiens, Painters 11 and their contemporaries. On display from 14 February – 9 March 2014, the exhibition will coincide with Armory Art Fair in New York, Sotheby’s auctions of Contemporary Art and 20th Century Design in early March, and another S|2 selling exhibition of work by Italian artist Harry Bertoia.

“We are creating an unprecedented occasion for international collectors and sellers to engage in a market that has been relatively sheltered. It is an honor to wave a flag for Canada in this context as we invite a new audience to discover these tremendous works of art,“ says Mark Buck, Sotheby’s Canadian Art Specialist, based in New York.

Marie-Jo Paquet, Assistant Vice President and Canadian Art Specialist, Sotheby’s Toronto, adds, “Many of these artists were exhibiting and working alongside the great mid-century Surrealist, Modernist, Abstract Expressionist and Color Field painters in New York, London and Paris. While they were critically acclaimed and commercially successful in their lifetimes, they have not sustained the same level of appreciation outside of Canada and this exhibition will present a wonderful opportunity to both appreciate and acquire outstanding examples of their work.“
