Produced from 1950 until 1985, Ref. 2499 is recognized as one of the most important wristwatches made by Patek Philippe, holding a distinguished place among the firm's exceptional perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatches. The present example has remained in the same collection for over 30 years.

Offered for the first time at auction, this highly important minute repeating wristwatch is noted for its striking two-tone dial, made more unusual and rare by the configuration and choice of hour markers. According to Sotheby’s research, the present timepiece may be unique within the coveted Ref. 4261 genre, of which it is estimated that fewer than 40 examples exist.

This well preserved and previously unrecorded example of the Charles Frodsham/J.P. Morgan Caliber minute repeating split second chronograph tourbillon watch is one of approximately 25 pieces commissioned by John Pierpont Morgan to be given as gifts. This present example was given to Thomas Cochran III (1871-1936) upon becoming a partner at the firms of J.P. Morgan & Co. and Drexel & Co., and has descended in the Cochran family to the present owners.

An Extremely Fine and Rare Yellow Gold Automatic Dual Time Zone Wristwatch with Date, Center Seconds, Bakelite Bezel and Bracelet

When Ref. 6542 – the first GMT-Master – was released in 1954, it became the official timepiece of Pan-Am Airlines, who had approached Rolex to create a watch that could easily tell the hour in two different time zones. The present example, which incorporates the rarely seen material Bakelite in its bezel, is distinguished by warm tones and exceptional condition. The model is typically seen in stainless steel and extremely unusual to find in yellow gold and in such well preserved condition.

Thirteen pieces from a New York Collection comprise Patek Philippe watches that highlight both the technical and design genius of the firm over the last 25 years. Of the lots offered, four remain in their factory sealed boxes and three in their factory sealed sleeves, including the present example that showcases the master work of enamel artist Anita Porchet. Its dial features an exquisitely rendered American Eagle, a unique design created specifically for the US market.

As the only known example of Ref. 1415 retailed by the legendary Palais Royal boutique of Havana, Cuba, the present example stands out within the famed genre ofHeures Universelles (‘World Time’) watches by Patek Philippe. When the bezel is rotated so that the home city is at the 12 o'clock position, and the watch is set to the local time zone, the 24-hour indication adjusts automatically so that one can see the current time in 41 world cities. According to Sotheby’s research it is the most important Patek Philippe wristwatch to have been sold in the pre-Revolution Cuban market.
