"The Flirt" is something of a hybrid. I wanted to write a bold, over the top social and romantic comedy that used the classic devices found in Shakespearean and Restoration comedies - mistaken identities, women being wooed by other women dressed as men, sudden dramatic changes in social status, communications delivered to the wrong people, sexual confusion, and plenty of larger than life characters. I was also very intrigued by making the men in the story the object of sexual objectification and exploring female sexual identity in a modern comic setting."

Flirt with the person next to you-your interview has begun!
The Kathleen Tessaro hit parade continues at Whom You Know with The Flirt, which is an absolute must-read! As you may know if you really do know Peachy, she was picked by CBS to be on the CBS Early Show a few years ago demonstrating how to flirt on national television just before a Boston College reunion, so this subject had personal significance and the story line is a huge hit here and it will warm your heart and soul this winter. And doesn't everyone want to learn about the professional massagers of the female ego? It tips the page scale at about 450 but it is so well-written the action moves quickly and the vivid cast of characters will keep you on your toes; it all flies by. Beware of reading this on the subway as you are likely to miss your stop.
So why did we love The Flirt? Let us count the ways.
Kathleen knows references in pop culture that will totally make us understand her-"a look that might have been sexy in a Miss Moneypenny way on anyone else but Clara." (p. 7) We review Bond too, and you know all about 007.
Unlike lesser authors in "chic lit," Kathleen is not all surface and no substance. You won't find any bubblegum here. She says insightful, intelligent maxims inbetween the storyline:
"He taught her the difference between presence, which includes everyone in its warm glow, and attitude, which keeps the whole world at bay." (p. 16)
and here:
"Jonathan imagined a large snowball barrelling towards him, then suddenly swerving, heading in the opposite direction, growing smaller and smaller until it disappeared...'But when a dynamic has been allowed to grow unchecked for so long, one doesn't always have the emotional resources to make the effort required.'" (p. 69)
Funny thoughts come up-and discussions evolve on topics such as is perfume dishonest? She includes horrifying thoughts such as the possibility of being married to a man that you could not take to the Royal Academy. And is love a mirror? This is one highly entertaining read, and you'd be depriving yourself not to read it cover to cover. The beginning and end both have a circular theme, which we also adored.
Heed this incredibly well-penned passage from page 138:
"Grabbing Taylor's hands, she spun her round and round until they collapsed on top of the massive bed. Pillows went flying. Shrieks filled the air. Travis clambered eagerly on top of them and she pressed them both to her, these two tiny wriggling bodies, smelling of warmth and youth and cake. She tickled them, covering them in kisses, blowing raspberries on the backs of their necks until they squirmed with delight. The perfectly made bed crumpled and creased....they were laughing so hard they never even noticed the tears she quickly brushed away."
This is the fourth of the five books by Kathleen that we've reviewed and loved-stay tuned for the next old one new to us and we also hear a sixth one is due to be born.
Whom You Know Highly Recommends The Flirt!
Come and have your evil way with it.
