It is a brilliant combination when you find a film director and screenwriter that also wrote the book that the film is based on...and it's that much sweeter when the book is award-winning, as it is in this case: The Patience Stone earned the 2008 Goncourt Prize.  Sony Pictures Home Entertainment/Sony Pictures Classics always impresses us with their foreign film selections; they are always thought-provoking and will make you see your world in new light when you look at it through the eyes of others in their story.

In this case, we meet an unnamed woman faced with a feeling of helplessness as she lives in a warzone, with her severely wounded husband in a decidedly vegetative state with no real healthcare.  She sits vigil by his side in their poor, impoverished community in distress.  The mother to two young girls as well, this woman has no one to count on but her aunt, who seems to have moved away.   The feeling of despair will enlighten the western world with the realities that are faced in such an environment; there's a shooting when the woman goes down the street to buy bananas.

Complete with an underground bomb shelter, this community is constantly rocked by peril in everyday circumstances.  There's no running water- there's a person called a water bearer that brings water to them.  The word oppressive will ring clear in many challenges the viewer observes.  Neighbors are brutally killed, and circumstances dictate that the woman must take action.  Seeing how she tries to find her aunt and how she comes to terms with her unfortunate realities will keep you hoping for her.  Like another recent previous release by Sony, Wadjda, The Patience Stone shows American women and women of the Western world just how lucky we are to live where we do.  The conditions of how women are treated in The Patience Stone you will find truly appalling and will certainly inspire discussion.

The meaning of the title will be understood to you later in the film; we won't give it all away.  It is certainly a confessional and if you are one interested by humanity across cultures, you'll be highly intrigued by what transpires.  Character development in this woman is just fantastic, and the concept of the storyline is astoundingly unique in this powerful drama, complete with an ending that gives new meaning to the word gripping.

The Patience Stone is Recommended by Whom You Know!  Bravo once again to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is pleased to announce that THE PATIENCE STONE will become available on DVD March 18.

This Sony Pictures Classics film is directed and co-written by Atiq Rahimi, based on Rahimi’s best-selling novel of the same name, which won the 2008 Goncourt Prize -- the most prestigious book award in France. Featuring a tour-de-force performance by actress Golshifteh Farahani (Body of Lies), THE PATIENCE STONE was Afghanistan’s 2012 submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards®. It was also the official selection of the Toronto, Tribeca and Los Angeles Film Festivals. Available exclusively on the DVD is the “Making of THE PATIENCE STONE” featurette, taking viewers behind the scenes for a look at the film’s production.

Synopsis

In a country torn apart by war, a young woman watches over her older husband, who took a bullet in the neck that has reduced him to a comatose state. One day, the woman's vigil changes. She begins to speak truth to her silent husband, telling him about her suffering, her dreams and her secrets. After years of living under his control, with no voice of her own, she says things she could never have spoken before. Her husband has unconsciously become syngué sabour (the patience stone) - a magical black stone that, according to Persian mythology, absorbs the plight
of those who confide in it. The woman's confessions are extraordinary and without restraint. But after weeks of looking after her husband, she begins to act, discovering herself in the relationship she starts with a young soldier. THE PATIENCE STONE is adapted from the best-selling novel by Atiq Rahimi.
