We especially enjoyed this because Peachy used to reside in Cork as a student, as well as another one of our panelists.  Both were on a Boston College program to UCC.

If you're looking for a good, old-fashioned "whodunnit" with a good serving of Irish culture mixed in, Buried in a Bog is the book for you! The first in the "County Cork Mystery" series by author Sheila Connolly, this engaging, enjoyable novel centers on the small Irish village of Leap, where American Maura Donovan finds herself shortly after her grandmother's death, honoring the wish of her beloved gran. Her grandmother was born and raised in Leap, and although Maura is unsure of exactly why her grandmother wanted her to visit, she knows she must honor her promise to do so. She quickly finds herself enveloped in village life and working behind the bar of the local pub, Sullivan's, which is busier than usual, thanks to the discovery of a body in a nearby bog, which is determined to have been sitting in the bog for nearly 50. This is big news for the little village, and the villagers gather nightly at the pub to discuss the excitement. They are thrown into even more of a tizzy when another body shows up - but this time, it hits a little closer to home, as the dead man in question was alive, well, and in the pub shortly before he was found dead. Maura, having found some information that she thinks may be related to the discovery of the "bog man," finds herself unwittingly involved in the investigations of both deaths, and soon fears that someone may have it out for her, next! This charming, intriguing, page-turner of a novel will have readers enraptured from start to finish - very highly recommended by this panelist!

Buried in a Bog is the first book in Sheila Connolly’s most recent mystery series, The County Cork Mysteries. Connolly brings Ireland – and County Cork, specifically – to life! The book is focused on two of my favorite places, Boston and Ireland, so there were great expectations straight out of the gate. It introduces heroine Maura Donovan, taking her first trip to the old country after the death of her grandmother. She finds herself in a small town in County Cork, surrounded by distant relatives, new friends and MYSTERY! Though a little overwhelmed, she takes things in stride, making her mark on what may become her new home. Connolly’s writing is comfortable and enjoyable and takes the reader on an entertaining journey into Ireland. Whether you are familiar with Ireland or not, or simply enjoy some good fiction, this is a great start to Connolly’s newest mystery series!

Anyone with a smidge of Irish blood in their veins needs to get ahold of this new series by Sheila Connolly. Published by Berkely Prime Crime, Buried in a Bog introduces us to a quirky but appropriate heroine, Maura. Sent to Ireland by her dear departed Gran to make peace with her roots, Maura is immersed in County Cork, its people, its lore, and its mystery. In this case, it’s murder that keeps the plot rolling along, and thickening like a pint of good Irish cream. Murder most foul, as another famous mystery writer has penned, keeps our Maura steadfast and perturbed. Her arrival in Ireland is but a stop in her life’s direction, or so she thinks, until she gets embroiled in intrigue as only the Irish can weave. This is a poem to the pride of Ireland, and will strike a spark of irish magic in the soul of anyone turning to page one. With full on flavor , the atmosphere envelops the reader in that mist weary travelers might find at the end of the day. With a pot of tea at hand, and a scone or two, this charming start to the series will keep you glued to your seat. Not so far-fetched, the storyline walks the narrow lanes of a town called Leap, keeping us well within the geographical borders our heroine slowly comes to learn. Ms. Connolly may very well have spent many an hour walking those same roads, with her precise directions that no GPX could accommodate. Maura must stay around for a good long time, as she is about to acquire a massive fan base. Quick on her feet, fresh from the States, our heroine adapts in the wink of an eye, after her misgivings have settled in and she’s found herself in the bosom of a town full of fine folk indeed.
