This week Bonhams, the international fine art and antiques auction house, announced the appointment of India Phillips as Director and Head of the Impressionist Art Department.
After finishing an Art History degree at Christ’s College, Cambridge, India worked briefly at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, and in the Curatorial Department at the Museé d’Orsay, Paris.
In 2008 she started work as a Specialist in the Impressionist & Modern Art Department of a leading international fine art auction house based in London. Her brief included business-getting and during her time there she headed the team for the sale of the Madoura Collection of Picasso Ceramics, which broke a number of records for ceramics by the artist.
In 2013 she moved to another leading international fine art auction house as Deputy Director of Modern and Impressionist Art, before joining Bonhams.
Matthew Girling, Bonhams CEO for UK & Europe, comments: “We are delighted to have India Phillips join us to head this important department. It is always pleasing to have such a superbly qualified appointment. Her drive, expertise and entrepreneurial flair will help to build significantly on the success of the Impressionist Department’s operation internationally.”
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son & Neale. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street and Knightsbridge; and a further three in the UK regions and Scotland. Sales are also held in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Carmel, New York and Connecticut in the USA; and Germany, France, Monaco, Hong Kong and Australia.
