The sculpture, ‘Two Reclining Figures’ by Lynn Chadwick (1914 -2003), will be sold at Bonhams auction of British and Irish Art on May 28th in London for an estimated £400,000 to £600,000.

Matthew Bradbury, Head of British and Irish Art said: “Two reclining figures is among Lynn Chadwick’s most tender sculptures. The couple display an intimacy rarely seen in the artist’s sculptures up to this point. It follows on the from the earlier monumental figure groups The Watchers (1960) and Three Elektras (1969) and ushered in a new period for Chadwick where he produced life-size bronzes on a more regular basis. ‘Two Reclining Figures’ is from a small edition, only four, and further editions with Chadwick’s customary shiny faces were in this instance not produced.”

Lynn Chadwick was born in London and worked as a draughtsman for several London architects until serving as a Royal Navy pilot in the Fleet Air Arm (1941–4). After the war he worked as a freelance designer until 1952.

Chadwick was commissioned to produce 3 works for the 1951 Festival of Britain exhibition. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1952 with Reg Butler, Bernard Meadows and Eduardo Paolozzi and he won the International Prize for Sculpture in Venice in 1956.

His work is included in most major public collections. Chadwick is featured in the 1964 documentary film "Five British Sculptors (Work and Talk)". Many of Chadwicks prints have been on exhibit at Tate Britain, London. Chadwick was made a CBE in 1964, and a French Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1985.
