What if you could live forever?  But just not in your own body...Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has quite the thought-provoking, discussion-driving flick in Transcendence, which you should watch with your most intellectual friends and discuss afterwards as it creatively questions a myriad of issues addressing life in the age of the computer, and how we could live, artificially.
Can your soul be uploaded?  Is this too bizarre to believe, or is this the future? Would you want to go on forever virtually?  To answer that, you'd probably want to know exactly how living is being proposed, and Will Castor has that all figured out.  But is his world ready for him?

It opens in Berkeley, California in a wild state, and we are immediately transported back five years to a fantasy that is reality thanks to controversial Will Castor.  Johnny Depp, who first wowed us with his stellar Jack Sparrow-we've been hooked ever since-plays the lead of Will Castor, who is brilliant beyond his public's ability to properly appreciate it.  The collision between man and technology is constantly trying to achieve an equilibrium of both content and progress as the plot thickens, and we love how Transcendence addresses altruism through technology.

What if you could cure the world's diseases, end poverty and hunger through the future of computers?  It's not as simplistic as that.  The challenges presented both from a technical standpoint and an interpersonal position show the complexity of artificial intelligence and its possibilities.  And what if the wrong people get near the right computers?  Not everyone wants Will Castor to succeed.  Fight them, or transcend them?  This movie provokes beaucoup de curiosity as it evolves, and you might still be asking questions about how these ideas it puts forth can be applied in real life after you're done watching Transcendence.

Depp's appearance at times evokes memories of Sweeney Todd for us...and he reminds us of the Wizard of Oz, except he has substance behind his curtain.  Morgan Freeman shines as Joseph Tagger, and Freeman's obvious legendary skills are in full force, especially his stellar deliveries. Kate Mara is such a convincing Bree we did not realize it was her! Rebecca Hall plays a winning wife, supportive and solid as Evelyn Caster (we also loved her work in Please Give).  Here, the dream of Utopia is called Brightwood, a perfect place to build.  But will it last forever?  Parts of Transcendence reminded us of Ghost of course, and then you start to wonder if it's better to come back virtually through a computer or as Whoopi.

From a visual standpoint, we love how the backyard garden of Will and Evelyn is a lovely oasis of warmth counter to the dark coldness of technology.  But is it dark and cold once your departed soul jumps into it?  Though this is clearly a science fiction film, we do not feel it is necessary to be an enthusiast of this genre to enjoy the complex storyline.  Emotion versus science is another tug-of-war taking place here.  Imagine if you could rebuild any tissue faster than before-is technology a betterment or deterrent to society?

At the end of the day, these are questions for everyone, not only those generally curious and intellectual.  Of course, we are huge proponents of the internet and technology, which has permeated the lives of everyone with a device today.  But what is its future?  Can your brain be eternal through a computer?  Find out starting July 22nd.

Transcendence is Recommended by Whom You Know!

The secrets to building super intelligence emerge in “Transcendence,” arriving onto Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD on July 22 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. “Transcendence” stars Oscar® nominee Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean” series) as a researcher whose quest to create an all-knowing and all-feeling machine threatens to destroy mankind.

“Transcendence” marks the feature film directorial debut of Oscar®-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister (“Inception”) and stars Paul Bettany (“The Da Vinci Code”), Rebecca Hall (“Iron Man 3”), Kate Mara (“House of Cards”), Cillian Murphy (“Inception”), Clifton Collins, Jr. (“Pacific Rim”) and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“The LEGO Movie”).

Adapted from a screenplay by Jack Paglen, “Transcendence” was produced by Oscar® nominees Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson (“The Blind Side”), alongside Kate Cohen, Marisa Polvino, Annie Marter, David Valdes and Aaron Ryder.

“Transcendence” will be available on Blu-ray Combo Pack for $35.99 and includes the film in high definition on Blu-ray disc, a DVD, and a digital version of the movie in Digital HD with UltraViolet. Fans can also own “Transcendence” via purchase from digital retailers.

SYNOPSIS

In “Transcendence,” Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.

However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should.

Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.
