Acclaimed Law & Order creator and bestselling author Dick Wolf raises the stakes in his highly anticipated second novel featuring the NYPD’s secret weapon against terrorism—
Detective Jeremy Fisk
The Intercept was previously featured on Whom You Know:
A fantastic follow-on to The Intercept, Dick Wolf’s second novel, The Execution, does not disappoint. The Execution starts not too long after the completion of The Intercept. We once again are taken through the fascinating workings of NYPD intelligence through the eyes of Jeremy Fisk, our hero from Wolf’s previous novel. With initially parallel stories occurring in New York and in Mexican border towns, the reader is engaged from the very first pages. While Fisk is recovering from his previous adventures, the Mexican Policia Federal are hunting, yet continually frustrated by killings perpetrated by the infamous cartel boss, Chuparosa. The worlds collide during UN Week in New York City when a “baker’s dozen” of bodies are found on a beach in Queens. Fisk finds himself in the middle of another mystery unfolding as hundreds of diplomats descend on New York, taxing all law enforcement personnel within the city. We won’t give it all away here, but The Execution is an engaging novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat and hoping for resolution to the last page!
The Execution, the sophomore effort from Law & Order creator-turned-novelist Dick Wolf, is a fast-paced, chilling thriller guaranteed to keep readers on the edge of their seats from the get-go. Once again, we are drawn into the world of NYPD detective Jeremy Fisk, a member of the elite Intelligence Division, which serves as a mini-CIA, dedicated to keeping New York City safe from terrorism. Still on the mend from thwarting would-be-suicide bomber Marcus Jenssen, Fisk has recently been cleared to return to the force, and is tasked with the mostly administrative task of safeguarding New York City during United Nations week. However, things take a decidedly more dangerous turn when he is called to a crime scene in Queens, where numerous men's bodies have been beheaded and left on the beach. Meanwhile, in Mexico, Comandante Cecilia Garza, known in her homeland as the "Ice Queen" for her no-nonsense demeanor and lack of outward emotion. A member of the Mexican intelligence agency, Comandante Garza is selected by the newly-elected President Garza to be on his personal security team as he attends United Nations week. Shortly before her departure for America, she is also called to a crime scene in Mexico, featuring 23 beheaded bodies, each of which is inscribed with a carving of a hummingbird, which Garza recognizes as the calling card of the elusive assassin known only as "Chuparosa." Due to evidence she discovers at Chuparosa's compound, she has reason to believe that Chuparosa, too, is headed to New York with intent to attack President Garza. What follows is a suspenseful thrill ride as Fisk and Garza work together to get to the bottom of what's going on and prevent a major attack. A page turner from start to finish, The Execution a well-written, exciting, and satisfying read. Highly recommended by this panelist!
Dick Wolf brings back Jeremy Fisk to fight the good fight. Introduced to us in The Intercept, the home-grown James Bond is a cross between Jerry Orbach and Leonardo DiCaprio, lanky, intelligent, and sexy somehow. Mr. Wolf knows Manhattan well, having shot years worth of scenes from Law & Order on out of the way street corners, well known locations, and picturesque neighborhoods. We follow Fisk teamed this time with a narcoterrorist bunch as they deal with South of the Border malevolence. The other side of terrorism became more familiar to us, the reading public, in the first novel, and now we are treated to undercover homeland style. Beyond what the average person knows, and with resounding description that places us in the moment of blood, The Execution makes drug cartels the enemy this time. The hovering threat to our POTUS is flying just above our heads, and we can only hope that Detective Fisk with the help of Colonel Garza, the so named Ice Queen in charge of her government's security detail in NYC, will bring the villains to their knees. Harpers Collins has a hit on their hands, and you will be waiting at the bookshop door for every new Fisk novel.
How exciting to read the first two novels of Dick Wolf right in a row. After grinding my teeth and biting my nails over "The Intercept”, I dove right into “The Execution”. Jeremy Fisk is up to his neck again with an assassin working for the Mexican Cartel. But his incredible insight and drive to bring down evil keeps you captivated from beginning to end. I love the symbolic Hummingbird that links the deaths together. Wolf’s writing is electric and his plots are current and fresh. This novel is far more graphic and horrendous but you will be just as intrigued.
These are fun patriotic thrillers! James Patterson can't write them all.....see what you think of Wolf.

Dick Wolf:
Last year Law & Order creator Dick Wolf burst onto the literary scene with his bestselling debut thriller, The Intercept. The Associated Press declared, “…tight prose, great characters and the intense twists are all signs of a master at work,” and the Washington Post exclaimed, “[The Intercept] should rank with the best of this year’s thrillers.”
Now Wolf delivers his follow-up, THE EXECUTION (William Morrow; One Day Laydown; ISBN: 9780062064851; Price: $27.99/ $33.99 Can.), in which Jeremy Fisk—detective with the NYPD’s Intelligence Division of the Joint Terrorism Task Force—is out to stop an assassin let loose in New York City by a shadowy business cartel.
Ten days after the Mexican presidential election, twenty-three bodies are discovered beheaded on the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Leading the investigation for the Mexican intelligence agency is 35-year-old Cecilia Garza, a raven-haired beauty who’s notorious for her intensity and take-no-prisoners demeanor. Garza has learned the hard way that a forgiving nature can be an officer’s worst enemy.
Upon the bodies of the cartel’s victims she finds a carved symbol—a Hummingbird—and recognizes it as the mark of an assassin known only as Chuparosa, a man both feared and celebrated for his brutality. Even Garza, who has been pursuing him for years, knows almost nothing about him. Except that he’s now headed to New York.
Meanwhile, it is United Nations week in Manhattan and a grieving Jeremy Fisk is dealing with the loss of his partner and lover and the trial of the Swedish terrorist responsible for her death. There’s no time for grief, though, when you’re responsible for the safety and security of the world’s most powerful leaders. Complicating matters is the startling news of a mass murder in nearby Rockaway, where a dozen people have been found dead.
Fisk may not like Garza, the pushy new arrival from Mexico, but they’re going to need each other if they stand a chance of finding and stopping Chuparosa. Soon they both realize that there’s more to this threat than meets the eye—and Fisk will have to learn the hard way that justice is not always blind.
Filled with electrifying plot twists, high-wire drama, and even a little romance—THE EXECUTION is an adrenaline pumping story that could have been ripped from the headlines, yet is enticing and entertaining enough to keep readers wanting more. As the mastermind behind one of the most successful and prolific television brands of all time—NBC’s Law & Order—Dick Wolf uses his dynamic storytelling skills to captivate audiences with his Jeremy Fisk series.
Wolf explains, “The NYPD Intelligence Unit provides a goldmine of story possibilities for Fisk. As much as the threats—narco-terrorists in The Execution and Muslim fundamentalists in The Intercept — what also attracts me about these stories is the possibility of exploring the things that drive the people involved in counter-terrorism on a daily basis. And the psychological toll they face when they know that the only good days are the ones in which nothing happens. Coupled with constant anxiety about the cost of failure against enemies who are often unknown. This makes Fisk an idiosyncratic, yet totally disciplined investigator.”
