There are few things in Manhattan that can compete with the level of joy that accompanies an opening of a fantastic pizza place in one's neighborhood. Our new friend Benny Kacic from Montenegro (notice how people from Montenegro seem to be very good in culinary endeavors that we find) opened Bella Roma Pizza on July 28, 2014 and we found it to be excellent.
We went in unannounced to check it out, and Benny was super friendly and was personally there, as the owner. This is not always the case at a casual place, and it's surprised us that some places that we have not written about tell us they have no idea who is in charge. Benny is happily at the helm here. The place is spotless (we cannot say this for every neighborhood pizza joint) and brand spanking new. Even the bathrooms were sparkling. These were all good signs and we ventured to try a vegetarian pizza.
The crust was terrific and held up all of the toppings we chose.
They included: Mushrooms, Onion, Fresh Garlic, Peppers, Spinach and Onion. What smashing flavor! Benny is holding this in the top picture. Under Gourmet Pizza on the menu, it's called Veggie Lover and we specified which veggies we love - you might want to do that too if you are as picky as Peachy.
The pizza quality was above average for a New York Pizza (not Neapolitan. Stay tuned for that kind though by another place!) and not every neighborhood spot is as great as our experience at Bella Roma Pizza. We love American Pizza. We love Italian pizza. We love pizza period. Everyone on Sutton Place is going to love it here.
Our pizza quite enjoyed mugging for the camera. It did not last long however because it was delicately devoured!
It's good to be great at pizza but it's better when you can shine at other aspects like a solid salad:
Please meet the Tossed Salad: Iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and black olives. They held the dressing as requested! And the sauteed broccoli is tremendous and you need to try that too. Next time we will have to try something with meat because you know her name is Peachy DEEGAN (not vegan)...Bella Roma Pizza is Terrific Takeout! You and your stomach should go make friends with Benny too.
