At a Willow Foundation Charity auction in Bonhams New Bond Street saleroom on Tuesday night (9.9.14) Theo Walcott made the winning bid for a series of pictures at £26,000.
The collection of Sportwaves prints had been estimated to sell for £6,000. But having secured the prize Walcott then surprised the audience by offering to sell the works to the under-bidder, who accepted generously matching Theo’s winning bid of £26,000, and Theo then passed on his £26,000 bid to help boost this leading sports charity's coffers.
Colin Sheaf, Bonhams Deputy Chairman who took the auction, said: "In all my years of taking such auctions I have never seen a more generous offer being made or a more sporting gesture.”
Sportwaves features the biggest sporting moments from the best of British Mo Farah, Lewis Hamilton & Bradley Wiggins, amongst others, immortalised on canvas. Each original artwork has been signed by the sporting great and is available to bid for online in the charity auction at sportwaves.org until Sunday 14th September.
Bob Wilson, Willow co-founder and Life President, said “It’s the generosity of people like Theo and other Willow supporters that enables us to reach out to so many seriously ill young adults each year. Sportwaves was made possible through the support of the country’s top sportsmen and women by taking part. This support was topped off on the night when both Christine Ohuruogu and Theo Walcott attended our Bonhams exhibition, and with this unexpected & most generous donation from Theo.”
Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son & Neale. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America. Today, Bonhams offers more sales than any of its rivals, through two major salerooms in London: New Bond Street and Knightsbridge; and a further three in the UK regions and Scotland. Sales are also held in
San Francisco, Los Angeles, Carmel, New York and Connecticut in the USA; and Germany, France, Monaco, Hong Kong and Australia. Bonhams has a worldwide network of offices and regional representatives in 25 countries offering sales advice and valuation services in 60 specialist areas.
