Not all egg creams are created equally, and not all diners are the same. Some are just far better, like Green Kitchen. Its longevity is testament to its excellence as well! Few restaurants in the United States have been operated on a continual basis for as long as Green Kitchen has, and since it opened in 1931, only three different families have owned this diner which still operates under its original name. (Martin's Tavern is nearly as old, established in 1933.) Today, Green Kitchen is owned by our friend Constantine Kasimis, otherwise known as Gus! He came to New York in 1972 and has been in the restaurant industry ever since. Previously, Gus worked on the West side but since 2006, he has owned Green Kitchen and he runs the family-friendly spot with his family members.
For our salad, we ordered the stuffed avocado salad, which you can have with tuna or chicken salad. We had tuna. Note the gorgeous presentations-not every diner puts effort into is aspect of dining out, but clearly Gus and his team send the dishes to hair and makeup before placing them in front of you. It almost looks like an ice cream sundae if you imagine the olive on top to be a cherry, and the tuna to be one heaping scoop of chocolate. We were wowed by the delicious avocado and the bevy of nutrition that surrounded it, and this is one impressive salad.
The onions were of the proper thinness, we heard the right crisp from the peppers and the carrots, and the tomatoes were properly juicy. We like how the cucumber middle is cut out, reducing the soggy potential. Green Kitchen was immaculately clean we noticed too.
As an appetizer, we chose spinach pie. You know who loves it.
It comes with even more salad, which we enjoyed as well. and if you remember the commercial from many years ago that had a "where's the beef" theme, you can see a similar plug could be created for this dish. Other places do not make this as thick or as spinachy but they do at Green Kitchen. No one will be saying where is the spinach!
For our main course, we tried the Jumbo Shrimp Scampi. It was a hit-the-spot satisfying kind of entree and the shrimp were scrumptious, especially combined with the zesty red peppers.
Green Kitchen is absolutely Terrific Takeout!
