Now don't YOU want to try The Zep? Everyone knows, it's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW. We know Joe! How? We know Joe Farruggio from Il Canale in Georgetown, which is highly recommended. We love going to Georgetown and we've been several times in the last year, covering Washington, D.C. as a second city right now. Sometimes we leave that city, and when we do we have been going to Virginia. If you've been reading closely, you already know Joe is from Italy and he first came to New York City and then brought all that Italian expertise down to Virginia. Il Canale is much more upscale than Joe's Place Pizza and Pasta, but we liked the clean, straightforward, family atmosphere of Joe's Place. And, we like his fun marketing:
Founded in 1978, Joe's Place is celebrating "35 years of Magic" according to their menu, and we are so pleased to kick off our Terrific Takeout Virginia coverage with Joe. This is the first restaurant of any kind featured in Virginia.
Our takeout specifications are the same regardless of the geographic territory, and a green salad is always part of the meal, as well as appetizer and main course and pizza at a pizza place. Of course, Joe did the requirements and added more. At Joe's Place there is an amazing salad bar that has everything your little heart desires and it is fresh. We do not recall ever featuring a salad bar in Manhattan and when we find one fresh enough for us we will let you know. We asked them to create an amazing salad for us with no direction and they did. Fresh romaine, carrots, red onion, cucumber, olives black and green, green peppers, tomatoes and more added a lot of nutrition here. And they put the dressing on the side like we always want. Joe runs marathons left and right and you can bet his culinary ventures are also healthy. He's run 15 marathons around the world from 2002 to 2010.
Here is The Zep!
We had never heard of a Zep before, but now we have become enlightened. It is an American Hoagie says the menu, but people from the great State of CONNECTICUT say grinder, so we will be calling everything of this nature grinder. The Zep quite literally has everything but the kitchen sink: Ham, Salami, Provolone, Green Pepper, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo, Onion, Oil and Vinegar and Oregano. These are made to order just like everything else at Joe's Place.
Yes we love garlic bread. We tried it regular and also tried it with cheese, and both were amazing! Pecorino cheese and olive oil combine to make this do an even faster cha-cha on your palate.
Note that Pasta is in the name, so of course we tried some pasta. We bet you can't go wrong with any of the pasta choices but the 4 Cheeses Baked were screaming out loudest to us. Fontina, Provolone, Romano and Mozzarella formed a symphony of cheesy goodness.
And, they neatly also added meat sauce on the side which was delicious and thoughtful.
If you are a Manhattanite, you will particularly love the pizza at Joe's because it is NEW YORK style.
The pizza we chose was the Asiago, which is only available in the Arlington location (that's the one we went to) and it is new. It boasts mozzarella, asiago from Italy, grilled chicken, mushrooms, and fresh basil. It was just as good if not better than the best Manhattan pizzas we have tried!
Joe's Place Pizza and Pasta is even better than Terrific Takeout!
