CEA Foundation Awards Grant to San Diego Futures Foundation; Foundation to Help Support “Peer-to-Peer” Tech Ambassador Program

The CEA Foundation, a charitable organization affiliated with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, announced its support of San Diego Futures Foundation (SDFF) with a grant to support its Tech Ambassador Program. The program seeks to develop and implement peer-to-peer senior volunteer computer training and support. Its mission is to provide educational and technical support to seniors within San Diego County who are unable to easily access other instructional resources.

“The San Diego Futures Foundation is using technology to help seniors who don’t have the access or instruction required to use the latest technology, which can benefit them in their daily activities. The Tech Ambassador Program has a powerful approach of empowering seniors by having them engage with their peers, which benefits all involved,” said John Shalam, chairman of the CEA Foundation. “The effect this organization has on the senior community is just incredible. I am excited to announce the CEA Foundation’s support of this program.”

This grant will pair San Diego area seniors with trained older adult volunteers who will provide one-on-one basic digital literacy instruction and answer questions regarding computer usage and Internet access. If needed, seniors will be given access to a low-cost computer and Internet subscription. The volunteers involved in the program will be trained to cover a uniform menu of topics and will serve seniors in their homes as well as at locations in the community.

“Our goal is to make current resources as accessible as possible to seniors, allowing them to be fully independent by training them on how to use new technology in our Tech Ambassador Program. We are very grateful to the CEA Foundation for its generous charitable support. We are excited to be able to further related missions of serving seniors and those most in need,” said Gary Knight, executive director of the San Diego Futures Foundation.

SDFF will work with a number of organizations to continue their efforts to help bridge the digital divide. SDFF targets the senior population because they have the lowest percentage of computer use adoption and pose the greatest challenges. The Tech Ambassador Program will be implemented with the assistance of professionals across different organizations that are 50 and older. By including professionals in their 50s, 60s, and beyond in the planning and implementation of the program, SDFF is helping to ensure that seniors’ unique needs will be appropriately addressed.
