The New York Landmarks Conservancy: Haunted New York
St. Agnes R.C. Church, Brooklyn - 1905
If there's something strange in your neighborhood … Who you gonna call?
In New York, we’re surrounded by an abundance of remarkable architectural treasures … from the iconic buildings that define the City’s world-renowned skyline to the diverse neighborhoods where we live, work, and play.
Each month the Conservancy highlights various architectural functions and styles to better appreciate New York’s magnificent landmarks. So this month, in recognition of Halloween, we’ll celebrate Haunted New York with a look at the gargoyles and grotesques* that help give so many landmark buildings their distinctive character.
Gargoyles and grotesques are found throughout the five boroughs – from the Chrysler and Woolworth buildings in Manhattan to the Brooklyn Museum to Flushing High School in Queens to the Bronx Zoo to Curtis High School on Staten Island … to name but a few.
We’ll explore Haunted New York through our Tourist In Your Own Town video series and our Mystery Landmark competition. We’ll also create a Facebook album with some photos from our archives for you to enjoy.
Send us pictures of your favorite gargoyles and grotesques and we’ll post those too!
*Gargoyles have a waterspout through the mouth while grotesques do not.
