A stunning collection of bronzes by Britain’s leading sculptors heads the Modern British and Irish Art sale at 101 New Bond Street on Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th November 2014.

Henry Moore, 'Reclining Figure on a Pedestal'

A major and monumental work by one of Britain’s greatest artists, Henry Moore (1898-1986), titled ‘Reclining Figure on a Pedestal’, estimated at £1m to £2m will lead Bonhams sale of Modern British and Irish Art on 17 and 18 November in New Bond Street.

Barbara Hepworth , 'Cantate Domino'

Cantate Domino BY Dame Barbara Hepworth (British, 1903-1975) is a

bronze with a green patina conceived in 1958, the present cast is number 2 from an edition of 6 and was cast by the Art Bronze Foundry. It is estimated to sell for £500,000-700,000.

Cantate Domino is a powerful and elegant sculpture by Dame Barbara Hepworth, conceived just two years after the sculptor had begun to work with bronze; her first recorded piece using this medium. The present sculpture, intended to be sited outdoors, is most successful when viewed in the context of its surrounding landscape.

Sir Jacob Epstein, 'Sir Winston Churchill'

Sir Winston Churchill by Sir Jacob Epstein (British, 1880-1959) is a bronze conceived in 1946, estimated at £50,000-80,000.

In November of 1946 Epstein was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee to sculpt the present work. He recollects: 'The Ministry of Information were naturally eager for me to work from Churchill but the opportunity did not come up until after the war when he was living opposite me. He arrived at my studio complete with secretary, and a plain clothes man who planted himself at the door intending to remain on guard throughout the sitting. I offered this gentleman a chair whereupon Churchill abruptly dismissed him. Lighting his cigar, with his secretary seated behind me for dictation, we were all set for a fair start. After an hour this secretary was dismissed and a second appeared for further dictation to the accompaniment of a second cigar. After three somewhat restless sittings Churchill decided to stay at Chartwell where he gave me three further sittings.'
Dame Elisabeth Frink, 'Dog'

Dog, by Dame Elisabeth Frink R.A. (British, 1930-1993) is a bronze conceived in 1992 and is estimated to sell for £60,000-80,000. Gifted by the Artist's mother to the present owner, May 1996
it is one of a number of late canine pieces sculpted by Frink in the final years of her prolific and illustrious career Dog is in fact her penultimate work. A subject that the artist first embarked upon in 1957, dogs sit within a much wider lifelong preoccupation with animal form that dominated her output. Classically composed in a pyramidal structure Dog closely relates to Leonardo's Dog (1990).

Sir Eduardo Paolozzi, The Artist as Hephaestus

The Artist as Hephaestus by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (British, 1924-2005) Is bronze estimated at £100,000-150,000.

The Artist as Hephaestus was commissioned by the London and Paris Property Group for the front facade of their new offices at 34‐36 High Holborn, London, WC1. The commission stipulated that the work should incorporate a self‐portrait of the artist.
