If you know Peachy well, you know her degree is a B.A. in American History from Boston College (though sometimes she kids that her degree is in hockey). There wasn't a class offered on how to eat your way through American history, however, we are starting to feel like we could teach it! (Peachy did teach Public Speaking with Dr. Pick when she was a student.) It would absolutely be a field trip. From Delmonico's here to Martin's Tavern in Washington, D.C., we find that places that have endured and prospered for generations have done that because they offer a superior experience. We don't like to see new places crash and burn, and this happens in Manhattan more often than not. In our research for Old Town Bar Restaurant, we discovered that owner Gerard Meagher, who owns and has owned this establishment since the 1970's with his family, is a Fordham grad, and he was delightful to meet and was pleasant from the moment we walked in. Gerard believes that this is among Manhattan's ten oldest restaurants and he tells us he has been to Martin's Tavern, so next time Gerard say hello to Billy please. We began with the Caesar Salad: Romaine lettuce with Garlic-Anchovy Dressing, Parmesan Cheese, Croutons and Anchovies. It was very good, fresh and we love that they listened and put the dressing on the side. We loved the dressing, and the anchovies were amazing dancing in the superior greens.
We can't recall ever featuring chili before in our hundreds perhaps a thousand now posts on food. We absolutely adored the Old Town Chili and it was our favorite of the three components of the review. We didn't realize how much we liked chili until we tried this version with cool Cheddar, diced onions and sour cream which was the epitome of a culinary creation hitting "the spot." The soups and specials change every day, and as it cools down we will certainly have to try their soup.
Though the Cheeseburger sounded amazing, Peachy realizes she should try to be a bit healthy once in awhile. To that end, for our entree we opted for the Broiled Chicken Breast.
This again emphasized how Old Town Bar Restaurant does straightforward food well, and the quality is solid.
This hot sandwich is served on a toasted Kaiser Roll with Lettuce, Red Onion and garlic mayonnaise, and the chicken is seasoned just right.
