An interview with:

COMMISSIONER BETTMAN

COMMISSIONER BETTMAN: Good evening, everyone. I just wanted to thank everyone for being here. A great weekend here in Santa Clara, between the Spectator Plaza, the announcement yesterday that we were revising our stats on NHL.com

with our partnership through SAP, and having over 70,000 people here tonight --which I believe of the Stadium Series games it was the most well-attended. It was a fun game, a fun evening, and everybody in the stands, unless of course at the end you were rooting for San Jose, had a great time. But it was a game with two points importantly at stake. It's part of an intense rivalry. And if you think about the state of hockey in California, focus on the fact that youth participation is approaching 100% increase over the last 20 years, that between this game and the one in Dodger Stadium, 125,000 people attended the two games, and that there are great rivalries among the three California teams.
I can't thank the 49ers and Jed York enough for their hospitality in allowing us to conduct the game here. Obviously I want to thank Hasso Plattner, and the San Jose Sharks, Doug Wilson, the coaching staff, and Phil Anschutz, the Kings and their coaching staff, because without everybody's cooperation this doesn't take place.

And from my standpoint, obviously (thanks to) our hockey operations group under Colin Campbell, and our events group under Don Renzulli and of course Dan Craig who makes ice possible in places where people never predicted it.

On that note, again, thank you all for being here, and we think we had a great time.

Q. Can you envision coming back to California for another outdoor game time soon?
COMMISSIONER BETTMAN: Well, the soon part I don't know the answer to because the games, the outdoor games, remain in such demand. Do I envision us coming back at some point for more outdoor games? The answer is: absolutely. It's been great. We couldn't have asked for a better time, whether it was last year at Dodger Stadium or here at Levi's. The combination of seeing this many NHL hockey fans in California shows you exactly what the game has accomplished -- what these three franchises have accomplished -- in a relatively brief period of time, if you compare their history, say, to the Original Six.

Q. Do you think you'll ever have a Stanley Cup outside in open?
COMMISSIONER BETTMAN: No, I don't think so. If for no other reason than late May, early June it gets kind of warm for outdoor hockey. But it's a great question. So thank you for asking it.

Q. What was your experience personally with the facility, both leading up to the game and obviously tonight?
COMMISSIONER BETTMAN: This facility, you know, one of the things that maybe I omitted was in the course of this weekend -- whether it's our relationship with SAP and what we're doing with stats and our relationship with GoPro and what we've been testing with Sportvision -- having this game in Silicon Valley, and perhaps the most technologically advanced stadium/arena in the world was fabulous. This stadium is state?of?the?art, first class. And I think this community that can be proud of what the 49ers have added to it with this spectacular facility.
Just beyond even the app and the technology, when you walk around the stadium and you see how well designed it is and how well built it is and all the features it has, it's a wonderful, wonderful facility.
