"It's not what you do; it's who you are."
-the bees...
In the dead of winter, it's always inviting to escape via the big screen into a fantasy world, particularly if you can envision yourself in the fantastic boots that Channing Tatum's character zooms around in (we are also on a Tango by Paul Mayer Attitudes high from FFANY) !  The latest and greatest by Warner Bros. Pictures makes its American debut tomorrow, Friday, February 6, 2015 nationwide and we do not believe we saw a single snowflake in it-a lovely escape.   This movie is multi-faceted: a thriller, an action movie, and also a love story.
Kunis plays the star: Jupiter Jones, born with an extraordinary genetic signature that puts her in a class by herself.  Her acting execution was particularly strong, as is typical of her performances which we have been impressed with in our reviews of both Third Person, where incidentally she also plays a cleaning lady, and Oz the Great and Powerful, where we said ugly became her.  There's no ugly with Jupiter however; her costumes are extraordinary.  Particularly, the first one shown at the top of this review is just exquisite.  If you are enthusiast of the art of millinery, you will love the headwear graced by the fantasy characters throughout Jupiter Ascending...we will have to ask Ellen Christine if she designed any of these pieces.
We believe this is our first review of Tatum's performance, and it was a solid one.   Kunis and Tatum had remarkable professional chemistry throughout; they were each the first choice for casting in their respective roles.   We bet you haven't seen Channing with pointy ears and eyeliner before!  Oh, and by the way, he's half Albino.  Script-wise and speaking to the plot of Jupiter Ascending, words flow out of the mouths of characters that we'd never expect.  Follow carefully...we did get a kick out of how they poked fun of bureaucracy!
If you also are a fan of Call the Midwife, you'll see in a clinic scene Bryony Hannah, playing Nurse Schultz here.  She's quite a different nurse altogether in Jupiter Ascending!  Eddie Redmayne is eerily creepy, tempering his voice to different degrees of haunting and was impressive as well.   Eddie is the most theatrical among the characters that are people.
The cityscapes from Chicago (we kept looking for Jonathan, Patrick and our favorite Blackhawks; they must have been hiding, but you can find them on EPIX's Winter Classic coverage) and the greater fantastical universe were terrifically intricate, well-thought out and epic!  Graphically, this boasts many exclamation points and the special effects were out of this world in a myriad of ways.  The pure fictional cinematography bewitched us and evidences the wild imagination of the minds behind the film.
Perspective is interesting in Jupiter Ascending, and philosophical ideas about what is important -here the most important commodity is time - create worlds beyond what you know on earth.  Right to an unconventional marriage proposal - possibly timely given that Valentine's Day is not in the distant future - Jupiter Ascending proves to be highly creative and original.   We believe you may be leaving the theater with a renewed sense of appreciation for your reality and life on earth...
"It's so smart and amazing and so much fun," says Mila Kunis, who stars as the title character, Jupiter Jones, the unwitting genetic heir to a family that, quite literally, rules the world.  "There's a lot of action, and a beautiful love story, and even though it takes places in the most fantastical settings, everything feels so tangible and real.  Also, there's a fair amount of sharp humor, which I love!"
The highly likable Mila Kunis's dedication to her craft makes us want to see everything she puts her heart and soul into, and we think you'll enjoy the movie!

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in “Jupiter Ascending,” an original science fiction action adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski.

Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” is written and directed by the Wachowskis. Award-winning producer Grant Hill, with whom they have collaborated since “The Matrix” Trilogy, is producing, together with Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski. Roberto Malerba and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.

Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike,” “Foxcatcher”) and Mila Kunis (“Oz the Great and Powerful”) lead a starring cast that includes Sean Bean (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy), Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), Douglas Booth (“Noah”), Tuppence Middleton (“The Imitation Game”), Doona Bae (“Cloud Atlas”), James D’Arcy (“Hitchcock”) and Tim Pigott-Smith (“Alice in Wonderland”).

Behind the scenes, “Jupiter Ascending” reunites the Wachowskis with their longstanding collaborators, who most recently worked with them on “Cloud Atlas.” They include Oscar®-winning director of photography John Toll (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”); production designer Hugh Bateup; editor Alexander Berner; costume designer Kym Barrett; and hair and makeup designer Jeremy Woodhead. The music is composed by Oscar winner Michael Giacchino (“Up”).

“Jupiter Ascending” will showcase the kind of cutting-edge visual effects that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowskis’ films. Dan Glass (“Batman Begins,” “Cloud Atlas”) is the film’s visual effects supervisor, a post he has occupied for the Wachowskis since “The Matrix” Trilogy. Additionally, John Gaeta, the visual effects Oscar winner behind “The Matrix,” is contributing to the visual effects design.

Set for release February 6, 2015, “Jupiter Ascending” is a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, in association with Anarchos Productions. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

The film has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for some violence, sequences of sci-fi action, some suggestive content and partial nudity.
