Martin James began his beekeeping dreams at the age of 8 when he asked to attend a class at the local university (USU). He was too young, but the following year, he persuaded his mother to enroll and the professor allowed Martin to come along with her. His fascination for bees has never waned.
About a dozen years ago, Martin along with his sister Karla decided to get serious about beekeeping with a desire to make his passion his profession. Martin had already built a successful floor covering business, but decided it was time to follow his boyhood dreams. Since that time, Slide Ridge has grown from a few beehives to thousands of beehives and millions of bees. The operation now employs not only Martin, but his brother, two sisters, and other full and part-time staff. His parents have contributed their expertise from the beginning and continue to bring meaningful experience and service to the company.
After a few years of pollination and honey sales, Martin decided it was time to create a new, unique product, using the honey from his bees. The goal was to diversify the company and provide better revenue from derivative honey products. We’re beekeepers, and to us, honey is art, sunshine, captured in a jar. But we weren’t satisfied with beautiful honey; we wanted to make something different, something no one else was doing, something amazing! So, we decided to use our beautiful honey to make vinegar, from scratch, without any prior knowledge of how to do it.
It took seven years to understand and perfect the process: seven years of patience, seven years of setbacks, seven years of progress, until finally, we had the perfect vinegar, the perfect flavor. The end result was a sweet Honey Wine Vinegar unlike anything we have ever tasted. It retains the sweetness of the honey and radiates the strength and beauty of the sunshine that is its ultimate source.
