Dinner at Canaletto is an extraordinary experience, and one you should not miss particularly after you go shoe shopping for Paul Mayer Attitudes at Bloomingdale's. Located at 208 East 60th Street, Canaletto is owned by our friend Giuliano Zuliani, who also owns its sister restaurant, Primola, which was featured recently here. Canaletto earned a spot in Peachy's Picks in 2011:
and we were delighted to recently return. Of course it's named after the painter. It's every bit as terrific as Primola, and we began with a simple yet superb Insalata Mista. Giuliano's cousin, Elvis, is the GM at Canaletto. Just like Primola, Canaletto is another bastion of classy Italian sophistication on the Upper East Side. Louis Moroco is the Executive Chef of Canaletto, and his brother Samuel is the Executive Chef of Primola.
Canaletto was careful to put the dressing on the side as we wished, and the lettuce and tomatoes in particularly were fresher than they are at other restaurants this time of year.
Every edible hit of Canaletto is presented with flair and panache, and its style has spectacular flavor to back up the strong visual. For our appetizer, we chose the Prosciutto di Parma con Frutta Di Stagione: Imported Prosciutto with Seasonal Fruit. Not only was the prosciutto itself sliced just right and a delicacy from Italy, but also Canaletto used honeydew melon instead of cantaloupe, which was a nice touch.
Though we found everything we tried laudable, Peachy's favorite was the Risotto asparagus e Gamberoni. It's a fantastic combination and the shrimp is succulent beyond this world. The asparagus are in perfect proportion, adding both color and nutrition, and the risotto quality is creamy yet firm and delicious. We can't wait to eat this again!
The shrimp hit parade continued with our entree: Spiedino di Gamberoni Alla Griglia (Grilled Shrimp with Vegetables.) It's amazingly healthy and the shrimp are seared to perfection. They really go to town on the vegetables also, and who doesn't need to eat more vegetables: celery, red, yellow and green peppers, eggplant, zucchini, carrots and mushrooms team up to add to the symphony of the shrimp spectacular on your plate.
Don't hate them because they're beautiful. Eat them!
It would be a big mistake to leave without trying the Tiramisu, especially if you were so angelic with the vegetables....be sure to leave room to personally befriend it! It's the best one we've had in 2015 so far.
Canaletto is Terrific Takeout!
