Last Month's Mystery Landmark

Pier A in Lower Manhattan's Battery Park was designated a City landmark in 1977. It was built for the Dept. of Docks and Harbor Police and is the last surviving historic pier in Manhattan.

After years of neglect and threats of demolition, the Conservancy, led by Susan H. Jones, helped to secure designation in June 1975. A recent restoration has created a stunning result that has returned this building to active use as a restaurant and event space.

The restoration project has helped to create 200 new jobs and better pedestrian access to the waterfront and parkland. Click here for more information on the building and photos.

The building was correctly identified by Ted Scull, who recently celebrated his 24th wedding anniversary with his wife Suellyn at Pier A. Ted's favorite landmark is Grand Central Terminal. "A superb exterior and interior architecture, design, and function."
