The following statement is attributed to Sage Chandler, vice president of international trade, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, regarding the decision by the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance and the House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means to include Internet consideration in Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation:
“We thank the Senate Finance and House Ways and Means Committees for their hard work to reach a balanced TPA package—one that takes into account the realities of the digital economy and Internet era. Specifically, this TPA reporting language now clarifies the intention that trade should foster balanced copyright.
“Moving forward, future trade agreements that balance intellectual property rights with an open and fair flow of commerce will help ensure the robust and sustained growth of our world-leading economy. The members of these congressional committees worked long and hard to reach a bipartisan compromise on this legislation, and we now urge Congress to swiftly pass TPA.”
Chandler will join Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Tom Carper (D-DE), and representatives from the National Association of Manufacturers, BTE Technologies and Samsung Electronics America, at 11 a.m. in the Senate Visitor’s Center SVC203 at a press conference ahead of the TPA legislation vote.
